Hope everyone is having a great Holiday season. The thing I would like most to know(and may never find out) is the other child of Walter Irvine who was a merchant in New Canton and died in Cumberland Co Va at his brother-in-law's home in 1807 (obit published in 2 Va. newspapers) ..he married Ann Fitzhugh Rose (sometimes used Nancy nickname interchangebly in Amherst docs.) ..daughter of Col. Patrick Rose of Amherst Co....I know the name of one child of Walter and Ann's..Samuel W. Irvine who moved to Weakley Co Tenn in 1833...this name was sometimes spelled Irving probably d/t the Charles Irving family located in Buckingham Co at the same time and I suppose spelling was just lumped together..docs in Amherst clearly show name Irvine as did subsquent spelling in docs in Tenn. Ann later married Smyth Payne Esq. of Buck. a widower with 11 children.(found his wife's obit in Va papers also). Ann and Smyth later sold land in Buck. according to land tax and summary records.. The only clue I have to the possible name of other child is that in Cumberland Co there is a Martha Powell w/o of Henry who had a son Walter Irvine Powell and daughters with middle name of Rose and one with given name of Nancy... does anyone know of this particular family? I know I am grasping at straws here but thought I would give it another try. Thank you Mary
Oh, I suppose if I only get one.... I would have to ask if anyone connected to the Robertson family had ever heard of Jordena or Jurdina Harding who married Jesse Robertson s/o John and Frances Robertson. They were married 05/10/1855 by John Spencer. If you have any clues PLEASE let me know She is the daughter of my Brick Wall George W. Harding. Happy Holidays to All. P.S. I was just in Buckingham last week and spent a little time in the courthouse and then walked over to the museum. I left a file of the "Hardings of Buckingham County Virginia". While I find the records in the courthouse for the present a bit jumbled they were helpful. However, I recommend that anyone researching to also go to the Archives in Richmond and do not be afraid to ask for assistance. THEY WERE FANTASTIC!
Hello, I am Susan Troutner, and I am researching my ancestors from Buckingham County. My great-grandfather, John Anderson Cobbs, left Buckingham in 1849 for Highland County, VA. He was the son of Augustus Cobbs and Frances Abraham. Augustus' parents were Thomas Cobbs (1760-1823) and Nancy Watson (1767-after 1850), married about 1784 in Albemarle County. My burning question is: Who were the parents of this Thomas Cobbs and his brother William? According to Ward's Land Tax Summaries and Implied Deeds, Vol. 1, Thomas Cobbs purchased 1,000 acres in 1795 from Thomas Cobbs and unknown Weaver. He purchased additional land along the Slate River from 1799 until 1818, and owned approximately 2,242 acres at his death. Then, after 1823, all transitions are listed as "Estate of Thomas Cobbs" Augustus sold his 252 acres on the Slate River, seven miles northeast from the courthouse, and on the 1830 census appears to have moved closer to his wife's family, the Abrahams and Kitchens. Augustus' wife was Frances Abraham. Her sister Judith married a Kitchen. Ward also states that Thomas Cobbs' residence was listed as on the Slate River, five miles northeast of the Buckingham Court House with land adjacent on Muddy Creek. His brother William Cobbs' residence was 8 miles northeast of the courthouse. If anyone has information that would connect Thomas and William back to the next generation, I would appreciate this help. My brick wall in Buckingham County, Virginia is who were the parents of Julius Coleman (1743-1842) and the parents of his wife Elizabeth Coleman (1771-1853) They were married in Cumberland County 24 September 1789. James Coleman signed their marriage bond, and he could have been the parent of either of them. They lived near the Cumberland - Buckingham county line. I need to prove their parents. They are not to be confused with the Julius and Elizabeth Coleman of Caroline County, Virginia, living in the same time period. Their children were: Anna L., Daniel, Martha, Eliji E., Sally A., Guliulmus, Augustus, Mary Ann, and Julius C. Thanks for any help. Carl Coleman Rosen Westminster, Maryland.
My wish would be to find out more about my Robertson descendants and where they are buried in Buckingham or surrounding counties. Hugh Robertson came to Virginia from Scotland around the time of the American Revolution. He married twice, Jemima then Susannah Ligon. (1787) Of the two unions there is about 15 children. Thomas Robertson, (1802) one of the sons of Susannah and Hugh married three times, Elizabeth Conner (an aunt of a famous Captain William Jackson Conner of Nelson county), Martha Spencer, and Mary Harvey. He had children with the first two wives. The oldest son of Elizabeth Conner and Thomas Robertson was Archer Thomas Robertson. (1826) Archer married Ann Seay(1850-1851)and had about 11 children.Archer lived between Buckingham and Nelson counties. One of the sons of Archer and Ann was Andrew Iverson (Ivy) Robertson(1861)who married Martha Jane Denton. Their youngest son was my grandfather, David Call Robertson(1899) who married Constance Curry Wheeler. Of all the Robertsons that were in the area there has got to be someone who knows where alot of them went. I have heard of Robertson county in Tennessee and wonder if any went there. Also a few in Texas. Any help would greatly be appreciated. If I found my ancestors resting places that would be a wonderful wish come true. I only know where Andrew Ivy Robertson, Martha Denton Robertson, and my grandparents are buried. Any help in this would greatly be appreicated.
During research in Curdsville has anyone run across any mention of James M. Cabiness or Callie Clay? I know they lived for a time in the area before moving to Mt. Airey, NC, where they ran a hotel. Thanks in advance, gynger cook
Dear Buckingham Listers, My wish is to find out the parents of my husband's GG grandmother Susan BAIRD b. ca 1820 in Buckingham County, VA. She married Daniel A. HUDDLESTON, (son of Thomas HUDDLESTON & Catherine STRATTON/STRATTEN of Buckingham County.) Daniel & Susan had several children: Ann, Daniel, Samuel, Elizabeth, Pocohontas, John James, Mary Susan,Sarah, Louisa & Dancy. We are related through their daughter Mary Susan HUDDLESTON. Thank you, Sandy & Ollie Flippen
My brick wall is finding the parents of my great-great-grandmother Martha Ann Spencer. Calculating her birth from census records she would have been born about 1815. She married Thomas Robertson. She was his second wife and she is misidentified in The Ligon Family and Connections as Mary Spencer. Thomas married first Elizabeth Connor. Second Martha Ann Spencer (name from census and marriage records of her children) and third he married Mary Harvey (from the Lost marriages of Buckingham). Mary is buried at the home in Buckingham. Martha may have been married previously. We find in the 1850 census a child listed as Mary Warner and then in the 1860 census she is listed as Mary Robertson. Thomas had a daughter named Martha Susan by his first wife, but she was married two months prior to the enumeration and was listed with her husband, William Lewis Kitchen. Possibly Mary is the daughter of Martha by a previous marriage. She is NOT listed as a child of Thomas Robertson in the Lig! on Family and Connections, but all of the rest of the children are listed. So this may be a clue to a marriage to a Warner. The only other clue I have is that it appears from land records that Thomas and Martha inherited land from Frances Spencer widow of William. Thomas' son Archer was also listed as living with her in the 1850 census, and later Thomas and Martha move from the New Canton area to the land that Frances had owned and lived on in 1850. If anyone has any clues to Martha Spencer's parentage please let me know. She cannot be the daughter of Frances as she married William Spencer in Henrico Co.in 1822 (she was nee Whitlock) unless the ages are quite wrong in the censuses. Lois Mundy Todd
Kyleen Mystery 1. Try Nodaway Co., for the Osborne family, my Henry P. Davis married c. 1810 Sara Osbourne of Nottoway County, permission was given by father or brother Branch Osbourne/Osburn. They lived in Amherst and Prince Edward Counties. THere is a book about the old homes of Nottaway that mentions the homeplace. Other than that I have found very little published record for the county and have not been there to th courthouse Mystery 2. The above Henry P. Davis. The Davis family had property lived? in Prince Edward, Appomattox, Amherst and Lynchburg at various times. Who is Ida's brother? Is their father Robert Rowland Kyle of Amherst Co? The Brick Wall is still there, I am looking for the parents/siblings of Frederick H. MURRELL who was reported, in his obit, to have been from Buckingham Co. Frederick was born around 1800. He was in Lynchburg in 1818, m. Elizabeth M. VENABLE there in 1821, and died there in 1842. I have been unable to find his parents or siblings. There was a Cornelius MURRELL who was listed in Buckingham Co., 1800 Tax List as 1 white male and 1 horse. Is he the same as the Cornelius MURRELL who bought 150 acres previously taxed to Henry ROBERTS in Amherst Co. in 1785, and was on the Amherst County Land Tax list in 1789, 1790, 1791? Could there be a connection between Cornelius & Frederick MURRELL? Both Cornelius & Frederick were witnesses together on wills, inventories and land deals in Amherst Co. in the 1830s. Any info will be greatly appreciated. [email protected]
Eric and Rob: I have a Sharp Spencer. He was listed with the early head payments with a Col. Anderson in the Albemarle records. They were in the part of that became Buckingham, on the James River. His wife was Sarah "Sally" Anderson (m. circa 1759). I believe a daughter or sister of " Col. Anderson". By 1777, he was across the James River in Prince Edward Co, serving as a lieutenant, appointed captain in 1779. He died there in 1814. Is Sharp a name that shows up as a first, middle or maiden name in any of your Spencers
Two separate parts of my family are from Buckingham County. MYSTERY #1: In the Curdsville area, lived John Wayles Eppes, who had a son Willie Jones Eppes. Dr. Eppes (1811-1879) was first married to Anne Grey Cox of N.C. Their 2 children who lived were Eleanor "Nellie" Blount and Anne "Nannie". Nellie married John Page and Nannie married Dr. William E. Osborne. Dr. Osborne (my gr-gr-grandfather) is my BIGGEST mystery. He may have been born in Buckingham abt. 1820, but possibly Appomattox CO. He practiced medicine in Curdsville for many years and their 8 children were all born there. He died 1890-1894, while living in Scottsville over in Albemarle CO. I know nothing about Dr. Osborne's birth family. MYSTERY #2: In the New Canton area, my gr-grandfather's sister, Ida Lee Kyle married Thomas Davis about 1878. They had 3 children: Merrill Kyle, Hubert, and Virginia. She later married Thornton B. Weller. Merrill married Katie Flanagan, and Virginia married an Anderson. I am just now piecing together this part of the family. Any connections to any of my family are appreciated. Happy holidays to all, Kyleen Gavin (in Sunny Florida)
Hi I am Alice from Fluvanna (just across the ole James). Been searching for parents or siblings of Samuel Robertson b': about 1810 (probably Buckingham) ; died between 1868 - 1877 who married Sarah T. (Sallie) Kidd of Fluvanna, in 1853 in Fluvanna. Their children were: Mary; Thomas; Olivia; Sallie; Bettie; Samuel; Emma; James Henry I have been tying to put him with a known Robertson family for nearly 15 years. I have suspicions he will is connected to the Robertson line that are intermixed with the documented Maxey family. As best I can figure he was probably from the area just across the river from the ferry near Kidd's Mill below Scottsville, around Hardware. The names for children are accounted for in except James - there are several James Robertson men who could be his parent or brother... Alice
I am searching for any information on Robert Garrett, born November 5, 1777 in Virginia. I suspect his father was a William Garrett, but I have no proof of that. Robert did surface in South Carolina about 1800. He married a lady named Mary ?? and I have their 12 children's records. Thanks for any help, Jim Garrett Orlando, FL
Eric, I don't have an immediate answer but I have considerable information on the early Spencers of Buckingham,Nelson counties. Do you have any dates on Samuel Madison Spencer or his parents. Also, can you tell me the names of Samuels Madison's children. I have a number of Samuels ( no Madison middle names) and am trying to match up yours with mine. I would like to know the maiden name of Martha, wife of Charles T. Toney, who died before 1850 and left two children: Mary Elizabeth and Henry.
I am still trying to find 1) the maiden name of Mary Jane, 2) their date of marriage (according to census info I have their first child was born about 1851). Richard S. (b: abt. 1821) is the son of Elijah and Nancy(?) who were both born around 1795; Mary Jane was born about 1832. I was in Buckingham in October and the nice lady (don't remember her name) at the Historical Society location had gathered all the info she had on Blankenship's but did not have the info I am seeking. Any help would be appreciated. It might also be noted that Richard S. joined the Confederate Army, 20th Infantry, Company E, Lee Guards, on 5/20/1861 in Buckingham Courthouse, Va. He was taken prisoner of war at Rash Mountain 7/11/1861. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Rich Mountain in western Virginia? While he was in the army, the family moved to Bedford and he is buried at the Confederate Cemetery (Longwood) in Bedford. That is where my grandfather was born. Janice
I would most like to find the parents of this couple who were married in Buckingham County Nov. 17, 1786 (info has bride's mother as Elizabeth Palmer): John JAMISON & Sarah PALMER Thanks, Kathy Huddleston Brown [email protected]
