Hi Debbie & all, I had responded to Nita's original question several days ago. But I thoguht I should also respond to this one. The Library of Va. has death certificate indexes from June 14th of 1912 until 1954. For the year of 1954 the surnames only go to those beginning with the letter P. They have death certificates from June 14th of 1912 until Dec. 31, 1939. All of the above are on microfilms. The state of Virginia itself kept death records on registers from 1853-1896. Then due to state budget cuts at the time the state kept no records of birth or deaths from 1897 to June 13th of 1912. They started doing so again on June 14th of 1912 when they started using certificates instead of registers. Now some counties and cities in Virginia kept their own records between 1897-June 13th fo 1912 but only some not that many. Thank you.
