Miranda, I'm not sure why you couldn't find the John Jones plaque at the Brunswick Courthouse. Looking at the main door of the OLD Courthouse, it is on the left side. It was still there when I was there at Easter. John "Hellcat" Jones was my GGGGGranfather (b. 14 Feb 1745;d.11 Jan 1793). His father was Richard (b.1703;d.1774 Surry County), not the Thomas whom you were looking for. "Hellcat" was a Member of the General Assembly (State Senator), Justice of the Peace, took the Oath of Allegiance, he was a Col. in the Militia, and a County Lieutenant. Hope this helps you some.
