    1. Family Tree maker

    3. To Lisa Whitley I have had This program for a year now and have had a good publication of a book I did for my dad's Clan Macpherson, it is easy to use, I just put 7.0 upgrade on my PC. If any thing goes wrong they will replace if free. I had a glitch in 5.0 where the comas were not working properly, and they replaced it with a free upgrade 6.0. I have 400 photos on my Canon Photo Realism -----they both work good in transferring pictures to Family Tree Maker. Something else I like is when you want to print a book, all you have to is push, print book and it prints everything for you to the last page, and this is with the title to your book, table of contents, index and the trees. I feel it is up to every person to what they want to use. In my personal Family book I printed 12 and gave the books for Christmas last year and they loved it. Oh, by the way, if you purchase the new program from Global Gazette in Canda, Family Tree maker is cheaper, you will save $40.00. I purchased the 7.0 with the 21 cd's for the Us and got one for Canada free, so I received 22 cd's for about $ 50.00, check it out, they sell all the cd's for Family Tree, and you save a bundle, and their tec. support is free. You can call them to order 24 hours a day. Brenda Compton------bmcomppton@juno.com

    1. The discussion on Border Reiver Trotters and Episcopal:
    2. brenda m compton
    3. Hi all, I have been sitting here watching what is going on between several people; I feel this is uncalled for, I really don't think God cares what church you go to; or where you are from; or what you wear, whether you are a Priest, a Pastor or in the congeration, or where your Genealogy line crossed. Because our ancestors didn't stay in one place, if you were English your marriage was arranged to a Scots to keep the peace, or Scottish married to Spanish descent to stop a war. I was raised as a Southern Baptist, my daughter and son attended Christ Chruch Episcopal Christian School in Greenville, S.C., went to the highschool and they loved it when the Priest Blessed THEIR Animals on a special day, loved Ash Wednesday, when they were blessed with the ashes on their faces. I really don't really see what all the bickering is all about, I am from the Clan Macpherson, I was married to a Trotter, my children are Trotters and whether a person is from the Border Reivers or not, we should have respect for each other. I feel as adults, we should act like adults and get back to the job of GENEALOGY. Sincerely, Brenda Elaine Macpherson Trotter Compton

    3. AMEN! Brenda-- I love Genealogy & simply see no point in the religious discussion. I was raised Methodist, went to Episcopalian, Methodist Episcopal, Church of Christ & finally joined the Bible Baptist. Now, I am a Christian who enjoys worshiping more by herself than with people that are sometimes judgemental & always aware of what people are wearing. Send no flames, any one!     1. Trotter attachment;
    2. brenda m compton
    3. Sandy K. Armstrong "Cannot get attachment through your-----E-Mail", can you receive attachments? Some of the people have taken it that all the Trotter lines are connected . The book of Mrs Susie Edgar hoped from all the information that she might be able to sort all the Trotters and put them together. " This in not true". August 23, 1943 Dated 1882 Taken from the papers of my Grandfather, William B. Trotter. This letter was sent to James M. Trotter, M.D.of Florida. This is to show the genalogical history of William B. Trotter who is the son of George W.Trotter, [ William] who married Miss Sarah Hagsett, [ last name may be misspelled, writeing small on origional letter], of Bagle County Ky., He was the son of BenjamineTrotter and wife who was Mary Brown; they were married in Gilford County, North Carolina. Benjamin Trotter was burried at Surana Corburn County, Indiania. He was the son of James E. and Racheal Trotter of North Carolina, James E. He died and was burried in North Carolina. His wife died and was burried in Rutman County, Indiania. James E. Trotter was the son of William Trotter of Scotland, who married Miss Caroline Hill of England. They both moved to Virginia, here in the United States. William Trotter was burried on the Banks of the James River, in North Carolina. His wife died and was burried in North Carolina. William and Caroline Trotter were survived by, three children, James, Phillip and Nancey Trotter. William Trotter was said to have desended from the Earl of Garvey in Scotland. [ There was no trace of a Earl of Garvey in Scotland, so I take it to be mispelled, there is a Earl of Gowerie, which has connections to the Ruthven line] [The spelling is the same & not taken out of context] The lawsuit was in late 1883-1888 with the Estate of Dr Thomas Trotter M.D. in Scotland. We think William and Caroline went back to England to claim it. If they did they came back to America. Brenda Compton Greenville, S.C. Fax: 1-864-2353237 E-mail; bmcomppton@juno.com

    1. Trotter's of Smoky Ordinary
    2. brenda m compton
    3. I found Smoky Ordinary in the Book by Augusta Raney of Atlanta, Georgia. The Book was printed in 1988 " Raneys, Jollys, and Trotters of Smoky Ordinary" Brunswick County Virginia their ancestors and descendants I found this book at Jone Memorial Library ----2311 Memorial Ave. Lynchburg, Va. 24501----I had Karen at the library to trace it down. This is some of the artical in the book in the Lawrenceville, Brunswick Times Gazette --Oct 6, 1955 VILLAGE OF SMOAKY ORDINARY NOWADAYS LOOKS PEACEFUL BUT ONCE SLODIERS RADIED AND BURNED PROPERTY THERE The little town looks peaceful now, but in those days it had a turblent past. An ordinary in Colonial Days was a inn or tavern, the ordinary in Smoky was a very important place, in the time of the Revolution it was the old stage coach road from Petersburg to North Carolina. Down this road came stage coaches, riders on horseback, seeking a night for shelter. Col. Tarleton stayed there for two or three days with his riders on their way to meet Cornwallis at Yorktown. When he left his raiders set fire to the tabacco warehouses, the fire smouldered for days, this is the how Smoky Ordinary got its name. The Ordinary remained standingand was used for a private home until 1936. The house was destroyed by fire but replaced by a smaller home. The house was built on the site, still useing the dront porch. The property belonged to Mrs. E.G. Raney,it came into this family as a wedding gift by Alexander Mallory to his daughter Elizabeth, who married Dr.G. Monroe Raney.Alexander aquried the property fromfrom the Atkinson family who went to Georgia. The Atkinson and Raney burial grounds are on the property. The Atkinson family purchased the property from the Hills who purchased it from the Woodroofs who had the place as back as far as records are known. The Perkins Lumber Co. is still close by, if this tells some one where it is. >From what I understand this town is 10 miles out of Brunswick going toward Lawrenceville Court House. There was a plack put up at Smoky Ordinary in 1987, in front of Dr. Raneys Doctor office. { remember this was in 1987} Elizabeth Mallory Raney , Born March 13, 1871,m Augustus William Trotter Jr., [ 1868-1940] , Nov. 15,1893 They had eight children; George Monroe Trotter b. 1894 William Augusta Trotter, b. 1896 Louise Trotter, b. 1900 Virginia Elizabeth Trotter,b. 1902 Isham Edward Trotter, b. 1904 Agnes Baugh Trotter, b. 1907 Carlton Heath Trotter, b. 1908 Leigh Raney Trotter, b.1910 On the Stephens family, I don't know, since we don't know anything about Ann -----, we have seen some family histories that have Ann Stephens----all I have is Ann. Barb, thanks for the mail---. I should have an E-mail from Scotland on the Hills, got the e-mail from the Glasgow University, it's Monday morning there, I will get something Monday or Tuesday afternoon from the head librarian, she is checking the book for me. 1. Town of Cochran, Brunswick Co., VA
    2. Paula White
    3. Where can I find information on the town of Cochran, VA? I can locate it on the Rand McNally Road Atlas, and pull it up on various map sites, but can find no info on the town itself - no yellow page listings on the internet, no hits on search engines for the town, etc. I'm researching the Cochran family (Jacob Cockerham, son Abraham Cockerham/Cochran) and have found reference in a family history that Abraham Cochran and Tamar Bruton (his wife) came from Brunswick County, VA. I can find no reference for them in the records available on-line, nor in the digests I've been able to look through at the library. But this town came up in my research. Any and all suggestions in tracking down the history of the town of Cochran are welcome! Paula White Katy, Texas pdwhite@swbell.net

    3. I am trying to find a Sarah HICKS She was first married to a John DONALDSON in SC before the Rev. War. During the war, they moved to NC, just across the state line and Donaldson bought a lot of property. They had three sons, John,Peter, William. John D. must have gotten sick, for he made a will and died in 1781, during the war. The widow then married DANIEL HICKS, who had known John Donaldson in the war. Hicks sells all of Sarah's property, and they disappear from the area, all but the oldest son, John, who moves back to SC and marries. I stumbled across DANIEL HICKS filing for his pension in Mecklenburg Co.,1832 and again trying to get bounty land for his past service in the war in 1855. I could not find him on the 1850 census of Mecklenburg. I am trying to find his wife, Sarah, and her two boys. They must have returned with him to his family home in Brunswick Co. and then moved to Mecklenburg Co. Any help with running down Sarah will be much appreciated. 1. Harrison
    2. Johnson, Terry M.
    3. I am looking for Talbot Harrison who married Mary Frances Edwards (not quite sure of her maiden name) around 1850. Talbot was born March 1825 and Mary was born in 1830, according to the 1900 census. Talbot died between June 1900 and September 1900. They appear on the 1850,1860,1870,1880,1900 census in Isle of Wight County as Harriss and Harrison. Their children carried the name Harrison, so I am going with that. I have been unable to find Talbot and Mary's marriage record or either of their parents. Since so many Harrisons were in Brunswick and it is not far from Isle of Wight, I thought maybe they came from Brunswick. They had eleven children all living in Nansemond, Isle of Wight and Norfolk County after marrying. Does anyone recognize these names? Thanks!! Terry

    1. John and Sarah "Suckey" Moody Rook
    2. theshadow
    3. Hello, My name is Jean Hancock and I am researching the family of John and Sarah "Suckey" Moody Rook. Right now, I know of only one of my Northampton Co., NC Rook folks who went to Montgomery/Dickson CO., TN. There were 10 Rook children in NC who were children of John and Sarah Moody Rook. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Moody. John and "Suckey's" children were: John Rook, Sr. dob: 1760 (we usually designate him as John II because there were three of them! John I was married to "Suckey"), Martin dob: 1766, Benjamin dob: 1764 (md. to Lydia Ingram); James dob: 1756 (md. to Elizabeth Ederington); Rebecca dob: 1758 (md. to UNK Short); Sarah "Sary" dob: 1762; Tabitha dob: 1768; Cattron dob: 1770; and Ann dob: 1774. These dob dates are not written in stone but they are all I have right now. I know that John I served in the RW. As far as I have been able to determine, John, Sr. (II) who was married to Susannah/Nancy Lyon was the only Rook who went to TN around 1800. Is there anyone who might have a connection to these Rook folks? Jean Hancock in TX

    3. Hi, I wrote yesterday and wanted to answer some of the questions I'm getting. First of all, PLEASE send your introduction and any info about your county or name TO THE LIST. I'm just administering the list and have no information for anyone :> You can find the list name in the TO: space above. Second, "to adopt a list" means to accept responsibility for the list, sub and unsub people who are having trouble doing it themselves, and building the list by talking on it and helping researchers to discuss their names and counties. You do NOT do any research for them. For the surnames lists, go here to adopt: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/sponsors.html and for the counties go here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/clusters/adoptcounty.html Please go here: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/ to see more about what administering a list means. I'm glad to help anyone but if you have research to share or discuss or questions about that, please send it directly to the list :> -- Clare Peden Midgley mailto:Clare@RootsWeb.com Allegheny Co, PA Genealogy: http://www.rootsweb.com/~paallegh/ For SUBSCRIBE info and MORE LISTS: http://communities.rootsweb.com/ FREE ###### FREE ###### FREE UNLIMITED WEB SPACE: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/acctform.cgi

    3. Hi, I'm just administering the list until someone adopts it, so I don't have an opinion about who would be a good ListHost :> Anyone is welcome to adopt the list and give it a try. Here's what I've been telling people: List management is fairly easy and with a small list like this is, not time consuming. You'll get a utilites page where you can sub and unsub people and do a few other small administrative chores, but mostly it's talking to people and building the list up so researchers can find each other.
