    3. YOU MIGHT TRY LOOKING BACKWARDS IN HENRICO COUNTY RECORDS. I KNOW THAT THERE WERE JORDANS THERE IN THE 1600's BECAUSE ONE OF THEM, CECILLY REYNOLDS JORDAN (WHO WAS A WIDOW) MARRIED MY ANCESTOR, WILLIAM FARRAR OF FARRAR'S ISLAND, HENRICO COUNTY. I AM GOING TO QUOTE FROM A BOOK WRITTEN BY EMMIE FERGUSON FARRAR IN 1957 CALLED "OLD VIRGINIA HOUSES ALONG THE JAMES". IN HER SECTION ON A PLACE IN CHARLES CITY COUNTY CALLED JORDAN'S JORNEY SHE WRITES: CAPTAIN SAMUEL JORDAN CAME TO VIRGINIA IN 1609, WHICH WAS JUST BEFORE THE 'STARVING TIME'. HE PATENTED 450 ACRES OF LAND JUST BELOW THE CONFLUENCE OF THE APPOMATTOX AND THE JAMES, AND CALLED HIS PLANTATION JORDAN'S JORNEY, OR BEGGAR'S BUSH. IN THE YEAR (1619), HE REPRESENTED HIS OWN AND NEIGHBORING PLANTATIONS IN THE FIRST HOUSE OF BURGESSES. WHEN THE INDIAN MASSACRE OCCURRED IN 1622 (24?), JORDAN'S JORNEY AND ALL ITS INHABITANTS WERE SAVED. HE GATHERED HIS NEIGHBORS INTO HIS HOME "WHERE HE FORTIFIED AND LIVED IN DESPITE OF THE ENEMY." BURGESS JORDAN DIED THE NEXT YEAR. ON THE DAY OF HIS BURIAL, REV. GREVILLE POOLEY, WHO HAD CONDUCTED THE FUNERAL SERVICES, PROPOSED TO THE WIDOW, WHO HAD BEEN LEFT ALONE TO FACE THE PERILS OF THE FRONTIER WITH HER CHILDREN. SHE TOLD HIM NOT TO CAUSE A LOCAL SCANDAL BY TALKING ABOUT HIS RATHER PREMATURE PROPOSAL. BUT THE OVERJOYED MINISTER STOPPED TO DRINK TOASTS ON HIS WAY HOME AND APPARENTLY 'BLABBED". THIS INCENSED THE YOUNG WIDOW, AND WHEN POOLEY LATER REPEATED HIS PROPOSAL, SHE REMAINED SILENT. SOON AFTER THIS, WIDOW CECILLY JORDAN BECAME ENGAGED TO COL.WILLIAM FARRAR, "AN HONORABLE MEMBER OF HIS MAJESTY'S COUNCIL", AND PROPRIETOR OF NEARBY FARRAR'S ISLAND IN HENRICO COUNTY. REV. POOLEY THEREUPON FLABBERGASTED THE LOCAL COURTS BY INSTITUTING THE FIRST AMERICAN BREACH OF PROMISE SUIT! FINALLY CECILLY WON OUT. THE MINISTER WAS REQUIRED TO PLEDGE 500 POUNDS STERLING "NEVER TO HAVE ANY CLAIM, RIGHT OR TITLE TO HER." HOWEVER, THE GOVERNOR AND COUNCIL THEREUPON ENACTED A LAW WHICH PROHIBITED WOMEN FROM ENGAGING THEMSELVES "TO TWO SEVERAL MEN AT THE SAME TIME." SOON AFTER THIS CECILLY REYNOLDS JORDAN MARRIED COL. FARRAR AND MOVED TO HIS HOME IN HENRICO COUNTY. AT JORDAN'S JORNEY, IN 1676, THE VOLUNTEERS OF CHARLES CITY COUNTY SOUTH OF THE JAMES ASSEMBLED TO JOIN IN BACON'S REBELLION. FOR A HUNDRED YEARS JORDAN'S JORNEY WAS THE HOME OF MEMBERS OF THE BLAND FAMILY. RICHARD BLAND, AN ARDENT PATRIOT IN THE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE BRITISH, OWNED IT AT THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTION. THE OLD PLANTATION HOUSE HE WOULD HAVE OCCUPIED HAS LONG SINCE VANISHED. 1. ROCKEFELLER LIBRARY, Williamsburg, Virginia
    2. Sue Downhill
    3. ROCKEFELLER LIBRARY UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library has unveiled a greatly expanded section on the Colonial Williamsburg website (http://www.history.org), offering individuals interested in the Colonial Chesapeake the opportunity to search the library's vast collections. New features include PATRIOT, the Rockefeller Library's online catalog listing the 68,000 titles in the Library, and guides to manuscript, microfilm, selected photograph and other research collections, such as the Shirley Plantation Collection of over 18,000 manuscript items. Previously, individuals had to physically visit the library or be connected to an internal network to access these resources. "We have electronically opened the doors to our major collections by adding finding aids and the Library catalog to the World Wide Web," says Public Services Librarian Juleigh Clark. "Now, when researchers come to the Library, they will have a better idea of what we own, and we can serve them more efficiently." Other features on the website include a virtual exhibit of some of the treasures from the Rockefeller Library's rare book and manuscript collections and special indexes to articles in The Colonial Williamsburg Journal and The Colonial Williamsburg Interpreter. Of special interest is an index to the several hundred research reports written at Colonial Williamsburg over the last sixty years. Early American History Research Reports are distinguished for the significant amount of primary source material in them and for their time and place specificity: eighteenth-century Virginia. The John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library is a research library specializing in the history and culture of the colonial Chesapeake. It is located near the Historic Area at 313 First Street and is open to the public. Library hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contact: Juleigh Muirhead Clark Public Services Librarian John D. 1. Cemeteries: Rook and Moody
    2. theshadow
    3. Hi Folks, I wonder if there is anyone on the list who knows if the Rook and Moody Cemeteries are located in Brunswick Co., VA? According to a very nice person who looked them up they may be located near Gaston, NC. My nice person said "...these are located in eastern NC, just north of Roanoke Rapids. The Moody Cemetery is labeled and there is another cemetery near it, both of which fit the coordinates you list. They are just off state highway 46, very near the village labeled Gum Forks. This is about 2 1/2 miles west of the town of Gaston. Gaston is about a mile north of Roanoke Rapids, adjoining it but across the river." However, according to my map, the "Barley" mentioned below is in VA. My guess is that the border between NC and VA is similar to the one between TX and its adjoining states---it depends upon how deep the river is on any given day! Can anyone help me? If I can find out for sure where they are perhaps I can find a cemetery book which lists tombstone inscriptions. Thank you for your help. However, I do wish you all a joyous season & you are most welcome to go and view the card, just keep in mind that it's from me personally then, rather than as the listowner.
