    1. Re:Sterling G. Scarbrough
    2. Hello, I'm searching for the parents and grandparents of Sterling G. Scarbrough b. 1777 in Brunswick Co (?)., VA. I can find no mention of him until 1800 when he marries Mary Reese, {in Brunswick Co} whose father is Isham Reese ( I have a copy of the marriage lic.). I have Sterling's descendants, my husband's a GGGson, but not immediate ancestors. On the 1800 census he appears to have a son under 10, who can't be Mary's, since they married in Sept of 1800. Also, does anyone know if this is the Sterling b 1800 who went to Fla? Any help is greatly appreciated. Carol Scarborough

    1. two people named Hix Ray
    2. SCHEELE, PATRICIA A
    3. There are 2 men named Hix Ray - one of them is my great great great grandfather. Surely the Hix Jones Ray (my ancestor) that was born in Brunswick County, VA and moved onto Wayne County, TN and later the Jackson Purchase Area of Kentucky is related to the Hix Ray who stayed in Brunswick County, VA. The Hix Jones Ray (my ancestor) that moved to the Jackson Purchase Area of KY is my great great great grandfather - But there is a second Hix Ray and I'm not sure how this second Hix fits into the branches of the family tree. Can anyone provide additional data? This is what I have found so far: Here is a Hicks Wray, born in 1797, and married Nellie Wright 11/27/1820. Nellie was born in 1803 and was the daughter of Elizabeth Wright, who gave permission for the marriage. Arline McGuire reports that there are a number of Ray / Wright marriages. Census Data 1830 Ray, Hicks - Brunswick County, VA page 247 Meherin Parish 1840 WRAY HICKS Brunswick County VA 331 1850 #558-558 Hicks Wray age 65, male, farmer, $2775 Nelly age 60 female 1860 #203 - 197 Hicks Wray age 63, male, farmer, --, $50, born VA Nellie, age 57, female next door Wright - Kirklawn My Ancestor: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pscheele/hixjonesray.html photo online here HIX JONES RAY was born 4-7-1798, Virginia and died 10-10-1895, Marshall County, Ky. If what my search shows is correct, Hix was quite the character. He believed the world was flat! Hix had been quoted as saying that he was "kin" to the author of "Ray's Mathematics", a popular book during his time. Research has shown the author was Joseph Ray but as of yet I have found no connection to Joseph. At some point in time some of the Ray / WRay family moved to Allan and Warren County, Kentucky. As a young man, he loaded the fruits of his labor onto a raft, floated down the Ohio River and Mississippi, sold his goods in New Orleans, then moved to Wayne County, Tennessee. Hix was married 3 times: Ruth Casey buried in the Ray Cemetery Almira H. Guthrie 1814-1884 buried in Ray cemetery Mrs. Bettie Edwards at Backusburg, Graves Co, Dec 1888, She was about 50 years his younger. And after he turned out to be more than she bargained for - Bettie left and no one knows what became of her! <<...OLE_Obj...>> Hix and Ruth came to the Jackson Purchase Area ca 1824, buying land there for 10 cents an acre. Virgi Bailey's book KISSIN COUSINS quotes another book Land Grants West of the Mississippi book I p.36 shows that he bought at least five different 160 acre sections. He was a founding member of the New Hope Methodist Church, also known as Davis Chapel. This church was organized in 1827. <<...OLE_Obj...>> Hix is well documented. Information can be found on him in several books. Goodspeed's "History of Tennessee...Wayne Co..." names H. J. Ray and Isaac Robertson among others who were subject to militia duty in the early days of Wayne County. These first divisions for the county were Beech Creek, Eagle Creek, Hardin Creek, Indian Creek, Cypress Creek, Buffalo River, 48 Creek and Rich Creek. No regular organized body of men went from Wayne county to either the Seminole or Mexican War. <<...OLE_Obj...>> Hix is also mentioned in "History of Kentucky, edition I", published in 1885 by Battey Publishing Company. Chapter 9 identifies Hix Ray, living on Panther Creek, in Graves County, formerly lived on Duncan's Creek, 4 miles south of the home of Maj Wilia Waller. Hix came to the county some time during the decade between 1820 and 1830 and lived the life of a plain, honest, Christain. <<...OLE_Obj...>> Hix bought and sold property in western Kentucky several times. In the Graves County, Ky Circuit Book G page 518, Mary Watts and J. M. Bressie, executives of the Wesly Watts estate. List of devicees of Wesley Watts include:... Richard Pryor and wife Elizabeth Pryor. (Check marriages among Pryor and Ray members). The sale of land included 100 acres to Hicks Ray, who purchased part of the South East Quarter of Section 26 for the sum of $370. 1. Family Tree Poem
    2. I did not make the relationship of the author of the poem, "Family Tree", that I posted yesterday very clear. The author is Willis G. Corbitt. He is not related to me or my late uncle, Ralph Cowgill. My uncle was the "family historian" for many years until his death in 1980. He copied the poem in longhand on a 3 x 5 file card from the Beaver, OK newspaper while visiting a cousin in Beaver. I just received his papers last fall and discovered the card another other miscellaneous stuff in the files. 1. Family Tree
    2. I found the following poem while going through my late uncle's genealogical research papers. Thought it was cute with a lot of truth. Clay The Family Tree I think that I shall never see The finish of a family tree. As it forever seems to grow from roots that started very low; 'Way back in ancient history times, In foreign lands and distant climes, From them grew trunk and branching limb, That dated back to time so dim, One seldom knows exactly when The parents met and married then, Nor when the twigs began to grow Wwith odd named children, row on row. Though a verse like this is made by me And the end's in sight as you can see; It is not the same with family trees That grow and grow through centuries. by: Willis G. Corbitt, Feb. 7, 1960 This was printed in the "Beaver Briefs" section of the Beaver, Oklahoma newspaper.

    1. William Moore of Brunswick to NC ca 1741
    2. Frances Cullom Harper
    3. I am researching the Bowens who moved from Bristol Parish to Brunswick Co in the mid to late 1730's, and probably settled on the Meherrin River just west of the present Brunswick Co border with Lunenburg and Mecklenburg where their land records placed them by 1745. Robert Bowen's wife's name from the Bristol Parish records was Avis. William Bowen's wife's name from the same source and from later deeds was Amy. The earliest William Bowen patent was on the north side of the river very near James Mize's land (Mize's Ford) and James Voughn's homeplace land in what is now Lunenburg Co. This James Voughn d 1735 Brunswick Co. However, Robert Bowen held land by 1753 on the south side of the river near Eagles Nest Creek. No records have been found to explain when/how Robert Bowen obtained his land. William and Robert Bowen appeared several times in the early Order Books of Brunswick Co. One record could possibly point to some kinship between Robert Bowen and William Moore. Does anyone have any further information on this William Moore? Where was he from? Where did he go? Who was his wife and any other family members? Why did the court believe that Robert Bowen would be in a position to garnishee and hold William Moore's estate? OB 1 p 460 (This page itself was undated, but the last date entered was on p 417, dated 3 Apr 1741, and this entry appeared to continue through and beyond p 460.) Upon the attachment obtained by Theophilus Field against the estate of William Moore order'd that Robert Bowen garnishee of the sd William be sumon'd to render an account of the sd Wm his estate according to law. OB 2 p 25 (This page itself was undated, but the last date entered was on p 5, dated 2 July 1741, and this entry appeared to continue through and beyond p 25.) Upon the attachment obtained by Theophilus Field from John Wall Gent. a member of this court against the estate of William Moore who is said to be privately removed out of this colony into North Carolina so that the ordinary process of law cannot be referred [reserved?] on him, for five pounds current money this day came as well the said Theophilus by Clement Read his attorney as Robert Bowen garnishee of the sd William in his proper person and the said Robert being first sworn declar'd that he had none of the goods or chattels rights or credits of the said William in his hands in his possession at the time of the levying the said attachment. Therefore it is consider'd that the said Robert go hence without day [sic] and that the said attachment be discontinued. I am also interested in any early records concerning the Kirks, Andrews, Vaughans or any family in which the given name Avis/Avice was used.

    2. Janet Bailey Bryant
    3. Is there anyone who lives in Brunswick Co. on this list who might be able to do a look up at the courthouse for me. On the 24th of October 1785 Jeremiah Bentley of Amelia Co. Va. bought 5o acres in Brunswick Co. Va. from Abraham Bottom & wife Elizabeth. I would like to know when he sold the land and if his wife's name is mentioned in the deed when he sold the land. He likely would have sold it before 1811 when he bought land in Giles Co. Tennessee. He is my 5th great grandfather and I would so love to know the name of his wife. Thank you, Janet Bailey Bryant
