While I keep chipping away at my KING line from Botetourt county, a thought came to me about looking in a different manner. My brick wall (at least in this line) is a William R. KING, born about 1835 (according to his 1862 enlistment papers), and born in Botetourt County (at least according to the 1880 census where his children list their father's birthplace as Botetourt). William was killed in his first battle in 1862 at Williamsburg and I have that info. The problem is, however, I can't find him in the 1850 or 1860 censuses. I have indexed all Kings in the 1850 Virginia census (1,885 in all), and still no luck. (This data will hopefully be posted soon on Rootsweb.) However, there is a William B. King in the 1850 census (pg. 146A), age 44, with 6 children, mostly spaced every two years, except missing a child at the age of about 15, the age that my William would have been. I also checked William B.'s listing in 1840, and it shows a son age 5-10 that does not show up in the 1850 census. Could this missing son be my William R., off galavanting some place else? That seems to be a good age to be placed in some one else's care to earn some extra money for the family. Is anyone out there researching the William B. King family, per chance??? If so, I would love to correspond with you. BTW, my William R. King's family was congregated around Indian Rock, just north of Buchanan. Maybe some of the Kings in Buchanan today might be related to some of his progeny, namely John Wesley King. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. Happy New Year!
