My grandmother was Cleo May Looney Hellems. Her grandfather was Joseph Looney. His Father was Alexander C. Looney. If I keep going and can trace back to Robert Looney. He came over from the Isle of Mann, sometime in the 1600. He had a land grant in was is now Botetourt County. My family if from Craig County. There are Renfro's in our family tree. ++++++++++++++++++++ I have some ties to the Looneys in Botetourt County as well. My ancestors were Edward and Jane McClellan Sharp who settled in Botetourt County around 1760 along Looney Creek. Jane's sister Mary married a David Looney, and after Edward's death they and other McClellans and Looneys resettled in what is now Sullivan County, TN, around Bristol in the Holston River area. Several Looneys - Samuel, Moses and others besides David, pop up in various legal records of the Sharps. I have suspected a closer tie than just being neighbors, but have no proof. Edward and Jane Sharp's oldeer son Anthony (from whom I descend) may have had Looney as a middle name. He named one of his sons Robert Looney, and that name persisted for several generations. If I can share any information with you, feel free to e-mail me. love joan
