Two of the sons of John James and wife, Malvina/Lavina/Levina SMITH/JAMES married into the line of NICELY in Rockbridge. I wonder if this is the same SMITH family? We have no clues accept that marriage note delivered by horseback in 1802 by Samuel Gray. We assume it went to Fincastle as in about 1802 it likely took in all the "official correspondence", for lack of a better work/s at the moment! Is it just John who is the birckwall?
