When those areas became states the records were sometimes put in the county in which they were relevant to under new county names and new state names. You need to look at an old map then look at a current one and decide what county comes closest to the area your looking for. Also to save time you can check state records. Virginia was parent to KY, OH, Tn. I've even found some records listed under different town names than what they are now. It is hard work but well worth it when you can locate the people your looking for. Good luck, Phyllis
