Does anyone have the e-mail address for Loretta Caldwell at the Courthouse? I checked the Botetourt County Virginia website and could not find any current information on the Genealogy Society. There is a listing for a Genealogy Club, but it is inactive. Is there an active one and if so how do you contact them? Google "Botetourt County Virginia" You should get a county site with links to the Historical Society and the Genealogy Society. There is lots of good info on the sites. At the courthouse are two ladies, one is Loretta Caldwell, whose purpose is to assist genealogist. I believe Loretta has an e-mail address and you could write her ahead of time for her thoughts. She is quite knowledgable in the records available. Also Rena on the Botetourt County Rootsweb site--she is webmistress among her many tasks there is quite knowledgable on Botetourt County. My caldwells migrated to this area from Cubb Creek in Charlotte County Va and I have many fond memories of going to my great-uncles farm on the Island here. You also mentioned going to the Va room at the Roanoke library. It is very good. Also if the church records you happen to be looking for the diocese archive is in Roanoke but it is only open one day a week unless you make arrangements ahead of time. Have a great visit to a beautiful part of our state and enjoy the scenery and people while you are there. Dottie!!! The Botetourt Genealogy Club is very active. I am the Founder & President. and you can always contact me right here...We are photographing the county cemeteries and I am placeing them on the Botetourt Rootsweb site. We are also planning a 2nd Genealogy Fair along with several other organizations. WE do a lot of research for people. I don't lnow where you got the idea that we are inactive. If you have a message for Loretta Caldwell, you can send it to me. I'll see that she gets it. John! I'm glad to hear you plan a trip to Fincastle. The Courthouse is open 8:30 - 4:30 and Loretta normally works on Monday & Wednesday. Besides all my other duties I have a full time job at the Fincastle Library. We have a nice genealogy room. You can search our holdings at www.rvl.info In the right hand corner if you click on Botetourt, there is information about the county, including hotels, resturants, Library hours etc. Loretta Wolfe is at the Botetourt Museum. It is located behind the courthouse. They are open 7 days a week. You can arrange for a tour of Fincastle either from a Genealogy Club member or through Historic Fincastle if you let me know in advance. The Virginia Room in the Main Library in Roanoke is a great resource. Laura Wickstead and her staff will be glad to help you.
