The Peffley, Peffly, Pefley Families in America, A historical and genealogical record of the Peffley, Peffly and Pefley families from 1729-1938; Published in 1938, By May Miller Frost and Clarence Earl Frost Call Number: R929.2 P375 189 - JACOB PEFFLEY (Son of No. 136) married in Putnam Co., Ind., Oct. 16th, 1849, SARAH JANE HARTMAN, born in Botetourt Co., Va. 1828, died Dec. 1st, 1902, Wilbur, Wash. and is buried there. Jacob Peffley moved with his parents to Putnam Co., Ind. in 1830. After his marriage he moved to a farm three miles northeast of Bainbridge, Ind. where he owned and operated a large water power sawmill, with a grist-mill in connection. After the death of his father, in 1869, he moved to the old homestead. When the estate was closed he bought from the heirs 360 acres of raw land his father had owned, in Dade Co. near Arcola, Missouri. Jacob was said by those who know him to be a mechanical genius. He invented a lath machine before the Civil War which he patented. The family have a tintype of him with the lath machine model on his knees. He was also a gunsmith. He was offered a large sum of money for his lath machine patent before he went to Missouri. He refused to sell, which proved to be a mistake, as the prospective purchaser after careful observation, made some improvements and secured a patent of his own. Before moving to Missouri Jacob built a covered wagon and trailer for the journey. The canvas covered trailer was large enough to use for sleeping quarters at night. They left for Oregon Territory, Oct. 1st, 1870. After an eleven day journey they were stopped at Sedalia, Missouri, by high water and bad weather. Jacob rented a farm east of town, for a year then he bought 160 acres four miles southeast of town. There were two houses on this farm. He rented one 80 and farmed the other. Here he had a hominy mill. He was ill most of the time from 1873 until his death Jan. 2nd, 1875. The summer previous, Jacob Peffley,Jr. was killed by lightning on this farm. The year following his death the widow and her children moved to the farm in Dade County in March. The farm was one and one half miles northwest of Arcola. Sarah divided up the land, giving each of her children 40 acres. In 1880 Sarah Peffley and John Peffley, Mary Peffley, George Peffley and Jeff Peffley moved to Sedalia, buying property there. In the fall of 1884 Sarah Peffley with her son George Peffley, followed her daughter Anna Peffley to Deep Creek, Spokane County, Washington Territory. Jacob Peffley died intestate. The final settlement of his estate dated Aug. 1877, Probate Court, Pettis Co., Mo. names the following children, except Jacob Peffley and Letha Peffley. Mo. 4 - MARY ELLEN PEFFLEY, b. 1859, d. 1910, Wilbur, Wash. 5 - JOHN BRECKENRIDGE PEFFLEY, b. 2-12-1861, d. 12-2-1934, Olympia, Wash. 6 - JEFFERSON DAVIS PEFFLEY, b. 9-7-1863. 7 - GEORGE WASHINGTON PEFFLEY, b. 9-30-1866, d. 11-11- 1926, Wenatchee, Wash. 8 - LETHA BELLE PEFFLEY, b. 1868, d. 1870. -- Jeffery G.
