I am looking for Nancy BURKS, my ggg grandmother, b. abt 1775. She took up with Uriah HUMPHRIES about 1794 and I have reason to believe that BURKS (or BURKES) was her married name and that they met in Botetourt Co. VA, where Uriah is known to have lived for many years. He was married to Sarah REYNOLDS at the time they met. They went to Clarke CO GA and Sarah divorced Uriah about 1799. Nancy had three daughters at the time. Until recently I have been looking for Nancy in the Clarke/Elbert/Green/Jackson co area of GA, since there are many Burks in that area. But it seems more probable that the couple met in VA and took off for GA when they discovered that they liked each other. Nancy's children were named: Louisa Lydia (Leddy) b. abt 1794, Mary Jane (Polly), Mariah, Joseph Benjamin, Elijah Uriah, Martha Jane, Presley Thornton, Madison Tignor, and Julia Ann b. 1812. (Joseph named after Uriah's father, Elihah named after Uriah and possibly a grandfather on father's side, but Presley Thornton has always made me think there was a Thornton link.)
