    3. This is from a really good book: PLACES NEAR THE MOUNTAINS by Helen R. Prillaman. It has lots of families and stories with pictures of each! I recomend anyone thinking about buying a book to purchase hers! BTW, I don't even know her so am not affiliated with them at all, just like what she did. This is some of the facts that I have copied for you, there is a story about the family if you want me to send it I will. I didn't want to make some of you read things you weren't interested in :-) The Riley Family James W. Riley owned over 600 acres in Carvin's Cove around 1826-1830. This family leads back to John Riley who first lived on Tinker Mountain near Hollins College. The family thinks he moved from Floyd or Montgomery County. It is said that this family built the first dam in the area. He operated a mill there. John Riley married Mary Magdalene Sarver. They had the following children: a. Henry Thomas Riley born August 30, 1846 married Frances Catherine Leonard their children were: 1. John H. who married Ora Newsom 2. James B. who married Bessie Tinnell 3. George T. who married Hallie Etter 4. Charles L. who married Dora Layman 5. Ernest Pl. who married Cora Belle Layman 6. Letcher L. who married Lavella May Layman 7.
