He was born November 2, 1840, and was in his 85th year. While a cadet at Virginia Military Institute, in 1861, he volunteered and went to the front with the Fincastle Rifles, one of the first units to enter the service from this county. He served through the four years of war and surrendered with General Lee at Appomattox. He was wounded three times, twice at Gettysburg, and during one of the battles around Richmond. After the surrender, he returned to Botetourt and engaged in farming, and also filled positions of trust in the county, and for about fourty years was a member of the county school board. He had been a member of the Presbyterian church for many years, and was an estimable citizin. He took great interest in the affairs of the county, and for many years he was reguarded as a leader in community interests. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters, also by one sister. The funeral was held at Galitia Presbyterian Church, attended by one of the largest assemblages of neighbors and friends known in the community for many years. The active pallbearers were his nephews. The Julia Jackson Chapter, U. D. C. placed flags and flowers upon the grave of this beloved Patriot. ~~~~~ We Thought you might like This for the notes. I have a document written by Wyndham Randolph Carper that details his life as a Confederate soldier called "An Epitome of My Tramp Through the Civil War". It's an extremely interesting account of his service and escapades during the war. It was passed down in the family from "Betsy" Echols, to her daughter Minor Jones, when in the 1980's she lent the original to her cousin, Mary Bennett Bean for transcription. William Bennett Bean also buried at Galatia Cemetery, served as a CSA officer from Southern Maryland. He began his military career as a 2nd lieutenant of the 2nd Maryland Artillery on August 15, 1861. He commanded the battery in 1864. Perhaps W.B. Bean met his future wife Ariana Carper through her brother Wyndham, or in his own war travels. In later years he was referred to as "Major". He and WIllie Ariana Carper and both are buried in Galatia Cemetery. Does anyone have any information about "Daggers Springs" resort near Gala. It was well thought of in it's time, and a number of well known Civil War veterans stayed there, including General Wade Hampton, and his family (who stayed at length for many consecutive years), General Fitzhugh Lee, and members of his family for one or two summers; similarly Colonel Stringfellow and others stayed more than one season there. Apparently Daggers Springs was in operation from around 1865-1890 and managed by William Bennett Bean for some or all of those years. By 1925 only traces of the resort remained. I noticed an error in my last note: Josephine Maria Carper, d. 1869 not 1860, married G.W. Pembroke in 1868. According to my notes, both mother and child died in childbirth. Also, might "Jennie" Buhrman wife of W. R. Carper be "Virginia" Buhrman and called "Jennie"? Thanks to Joy Fisher for the new transcriptions. Found my ancestor's will as very first one. Found several references to McClellans and Looneys, who were part of my family. love joan **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

Thank you, Jamee. I've tried that site before but unfortunately the interment list is partial. if you go to findagrave.com and go to the right side of page where it says Find Graves. Under that click on "Search 19 million grave records" You can search by cemetery so put in your cemetery. You will find your Wyndham Carper along with a picture of his grave. I didn't check your other names, but they are probably there. They have 25 interments for Galatia. Hope this helps! Jaymee
Annemarie, I'm also looking for Carper information. I believe there are a number of Carpers and Buhrmans buried there. George Buhrman, I believe is there and perhaps his brother-in-law, Wyndham Carper. I'd like to know when the Galatia Presbyterian Church Cemetery was first used. I'm looking for the burial site of Mary Grymes West Francisco. Her daughter, Anna Maria West Carper, is buried in Galatia Cemetery, but Anne's husband, Joseph Van Meter Carper, is buried in Locust Bottom Cemetery. A newsletter received today from Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke, VA says their newly launched web site includes Genealogy Search which records the names of all those interred since the establishment of Fair View in 1890. The on-line search also includes those interred at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The web site is www.thefairviewgroup.org When I checked this, you must type in a surname and all those with that surname will be shown. No dates are given with the names.
