Rena, yours is not the only lazy list. Some online forums in the past provided me with many clues about where to find tracks left by my ancestors. Now, these forums get only two or three postings a year. I thought for a while that it is just my cousins who aren't interested, but maybe the phenomenon is more widely spread. I will post my brick wall next week, which involves my Riley ancestors, some of whom remained in Virginia in 1880. To date, however, I have found not one family link remaining in Virginia. I wonder if I could learn something if I visited Virginia. My most recent Riley ancestors lived in Albemarle County (Fredericksville Parish, Charottesville P.O. and St. Anns Township) and Augusta County (Staunton P.O.). Maps dating back to 1870 exist for some counties of Missouri and Kentucky that show the locations of farms and the names of the owners, and these have been invaluable for tracing my Whitsett roots back to 1820 in Missouri and 1796 in Kentucky. Are there such maps for Virginia that might more precisely locate the points where I should begin my searches? If so, where might I see one? Hello all - I am researching one Charles Selby, supposedly the father of James Selby, born in VA (WV) c 1814. If one can find Charles Selby, I would appreciate his birth year, and father, if possible. Thank you for any help. I live in Canada, and it is very difficult for me to get to VA to do research. Muriel

Hi Rena I like the idea of the stories but my knowledge of VA doesn't include having lived there, or even visited. My great grandmother, Ellen Clerkin was b in Roanoke, VA just south of the Botetourt line. Her mother, Martha Cahoon was b abt 1830 in Glade Creek. She married Patrick Clerkin, b abt 1827 in Ireland. That wouldn't make much of a story of mine (the family removed to Missouri abt 1871) but look forward to reading the stories of others that live there. I have been attempting to locate any information re: Patrick Clerkin as I can't find him in Ireland. He fought in the 28th Virginia Infantry according to the book by Frank E. Fields, Jr. but it has little info on Patrick. I would like to find his enlistment papers and discharge if such still exist (NARA has only his parole signed April 13, 1863. I do have the marriage record of Patrick and Martha but no application for marriage license, if such was done in 1850. That is all I know about Patrick othere than he was a stone mason and farmer in both VA and MO. He died in MO about 1898/ Martha died in Oregon in 1901/ Thanks if anyone can be of help. Carroll Cooper Summers The list is not verry busy. I need to work on getting it going. Step on up and shout any time. Let's get researching, there's going to be another Genealogy fair in the fall. I got this copy approximately 12 yrs. ago and didn't think about the ink fading like this or would have written it out-just in case. Is there still a court house in Botetourt Co. or is there even a Botetourt county anymore? Thanks for any help you can give.
