    2. Trying to locate any references to Flanagan's in the county early 1800's. George Flanagan was living in Frederick County outside of Winchester late 1700's. Son John married into West family who along with the Mitchell's had lived around Fincastle and migrated to Belleville, IL (St. Clair County) in 1818. The marriage to Frances West took place at Belleville in 1835 and I am trying to determine whether they migrated there independently or whether the Flanagan family had moved to Botetourt before going on to IL. 3. The Peffley, Peffly, Pefley Families in America, A historical and genealogical record of the Peffley, Peffly and Pefley families from 1729-1938; Published in 1938, By May Miller Frost and Clarence Earl Frost Call Number: R929.2 P375 189 - JACOB PEFFLEY (Son of No. 136) married in Putnam Co., Ind., Oct. 16th, 1849, SARAH JANE HARTMAN, born in Botetourt Co., Va. 1828, died Dec. 1st, 1902, Wilbur, Wash. and is buried there. Jacob Peffley moved with his parents to Putnam Co., Ind. in 1830. After his marriage he moved to a farm three miles northeast of Bainbridge, Ind. where he owned and operated a large water power sawmill, with a grist-mill in connection. After the death of his father, in 1869, he moved to the old homestead. When the estate was closed he bought from the heirs 360 acres of raw land his father had owned, in Dade Co. near Arcola, Missouri. Jacob was said by those who know him to be a mechanical genius. He invented a lath machine before the Civil War which he patented. The family have a tintype of him with the lath machine model on his knees. He was also a gunsmith. He was offered a large sum of money for his lath machine patent before he went to Missouri. He refused to sell, which proved to be a mistake, as the prospective purchaser after careful observation, made some improvements and secured a patent of his own. Before moving to Missouri Jacob built a covered wagon and trailer for the journey. The canvas covered trailer was large enough to use for sleeping quarters at night. They left for Oregon Territory, Oct. 1st, 1870. After an eleven day journey they were stopped at Sedalia, Missouri, by high water and bad weather. Jacob rented a farm east of town, for a year then he bought 160 acres four miles southeast of town. There were two houses on this farm. He rented one 80 and farmed the other. Here he had a hominy mill. He was ill most of the time from 1873 until his death Jan. 2nd, 1875. The summer previous, Jacob Peffley,Jr. was killed by lightning on this farm. The year following his death the widow and her children moved to the farm in Dade County in March. The farm was one and one half miles northwest of Arcola. Sarah divided up the land, giving each of her children 40 acres. In 1880 Sarah Peffley and John Peffley, Mary Peffley, George Peffley and Jeff Peffley moved to Sedalia, buying property there. In the fall of 1884 Sarah Peffley with her son George Peffley, followed her daughter Anna Peffley to Deep Creek, Spokane County, Washington Territory. Jacob Peffley died intestate. The final settlement of his estate dated Aug. 1877, Probate Court, Pettis Co., Mo. names the following children, except Jacob Peffley and Letha Peffley. A narrow stairway winds to the upper stories. There were loop-holes up-stairs for shooting at attacking Indians. Only one is left, the rest having been replaced with windows. The basement of this old fort is more than ten feet high, the walls of rock, cemented together with a mortar made of clay and lime. In this basement is a very large spring, assuring a plentiful supply of fresh water during an attack. The building is about 24x30 feet. The foundation logs are two feet square and become smaller as the walls progress upward. All of the logs are dovetailed together perfectly and fastened with wooden pins as were the rafters. The doors and window frames were hand made as were all the hinges, shutters, locks, etc. The partitions and other lumber in the house are of sawed white oak, the boards being 1 1/2 inches thick and 16 inches wide. The first and second stories contain four rooms each. The third story is a low one room attic. It is said that when there was an Indian alarm neighbors gathered here for safety. They could live there for days in perfect comfort. Frederick Garst is said to have gained the sobriquet of "Indian Garst", through the following incident. One day he was on the bluff above Mason's Creek splitting oak rails. He was working on a log when a party of six Indians surprised him. They said they were going to take him away and kill him. He, being able to speak their language, said he would go with them if they would first help him split the log. They agreed and he asked them to place themselves three on each side of the log, putting their hands in the crack while he drove the wedges in. After they were in position, he quickly knocked the wedge out of the log, pinioning their hands. He then knocked each Indian in the head and went home to dinner. He was a man of tireless energy. Late in life he made a trip to Pennsylvania and back on foot. In 1842 he climbed the bluff across Mason's Creek. His body was found at the bottom of the cliff the following morning. Here he was buried and the rock is called "Indian Rock" to this day. --

He had a large German bible covered with heavy calf-skin and bound in brass, with heavy metal clasps. It was printed by the Christoff Saur Press, Germantown, Penna., in 1776. He used to read it to his children and translate the German. The bible is now in the vault of the Ladoga Bldg. & Loan Ass'n. for safe- keeping. There are no family records in the bible. FROM AN ADDRESS WRITTEN BY JOEL PEFFLEY, and read on the occasion of the golden wedding of his parents, John and Mary Peffley, May 21st, 1878. Our company emigrated from Botetourt Co., Va., was made up of father's family (five persons) one wagon, and four horses; Jacob Harshbarger's (nine persons) two wagons, six horses; Samuel Britts (seven persons) one wagon and buggy, five horses; McCormics (ten persons) one wagon and one horse; J. Fletchers (three persons) one wagon and one horse; J. Barbour's family (three persons) one wagon one horse making a company of thirty-seven persons leagued together for safety and convenience. We travelled nearly three hundred miles over the mountains and about the same distance across land where mud and water were about equally distributed. In six weeks and five days we arrived one and one half miles east of Ladoga and occupied an old log cabin. In the spring of 1832 we moved into an old log cabin which still stands on the lot near our home In 1834 we raised some wheat. We threshed and separated this, our first crop, by beating it out with clubs and fanning the chaff with a sheet worked by two men, while the third stood upon a bench and dribbled it down from a half bushel. During this year movers were as thick as possums in a pawpaw patch; corn-huskings and gum-sucks began to be fashionable. We raised flax, pulled it, pounded off the seeds, put it to rot, broke, scutched or swingled it, and then mother spun it and wove our wearing apparel. The every day clothing of boys our age (twelve years) was a long tow-linen shirt, and it was regular torture to break in a rough new linen shirt. Our Sunday clothes were tow trousers and vests with home-made buttons, and a buckeye hat. For winter we wore linsey-woolsey clothes and untanned coon-skin caps with tails flying to the breeze. For our pocket money we were allowed to dig ginseng, and manufacture wooden pitch-forks and hickory scrub-brooms. The sang (ginseng- Jeff Scism, 2000) we sold green for six cents per pound--if dried for twenty five cents per pound--and our brooms and pitch-forks brought us a shilling each. The only hay-forks used then were made out of a fork of a bush . We made in one season over 1500 lbs. of sugar from five hundred sugar trees on our place. -- Jeffery G.
