I am looking for 2 different families in the Botetourt area. On my father's side, my great-grandmother was Mary Ann Gwaltney born September 9, 1853. She was the daughter of Albert Gwaltney born about 1822 in Botetourt County. He was the son of Zachariah Gwaltney born June 19, 1797 in the Amsterdam section of Botetourt County. I would appreciate any information on this line. On my mother's side, I am interested in any and all VanZandt, VanZant, VanSandt connections, specifically Jane VanSandt who was married to Elijah Morris on December 17, 1801. The marriage took place in Rockbridge County, but I have found several references to Isaiah VanZandt in Botetourt County. I believe Isaiah to be either father or uncle to Jane. Since the list is slow, I will take this time to share a story. I grew up showing horses. My father and I traveled all over the southeastern United States and we met some wonderful people. One couple, I came to think of as my godparents. They live way back in the boonies off the paved road in Franklin County, Tennessee. I still spend part of my vacations with them, but I spent weeks with them as a child. I have always considered them family. I have always looked like my mother's side of the family with dark hair, high cheekbones, and black brown eyes. My "godmother" has these same (not unusual) physical characteristics. When we would go places together, everyone assumed that she was my mother. And we would laugh together and enjoy the moment. I have only been interested in geneology for a few years and I spent the first year working on my father's side. It wasn't until my mother made it clear (insert temper tantrum) that she would like to know a little bit more about her family that I started working on that side. After much struggling, I found a thread that lead to the VanZant line. When I found the VanZant thread, I kept thinking to my self that for an unusual name, this one sounded real familiar, but I never could place it. (My fiancee tried to tell me it was the Lynard Skynard connection to Ronnie VanZant.) Two weeks later, while on vacation visiting my "godparents", I realized why. When we made the turn onto the road that leads out to their farm (which had been in my godmothers' family for years), the state workers were putting up the new street signs. She lives on Van Zant Bend Road! I had chills! I just about flew out of the car when we pulled up at their house. And after I convinced her that I hadn't lost my mind, she and I went for a walk in the family graveyard which I had driven past 2-3 times a year for almost 40 years. Her Vanzant's had come from Pennsylvania down through Virginia to North Carolina and across to Tennessee. I collected all kinds of names and dates, and when I got home, I started comparing my godmother and my mother's ancestors. It turns out that the cheekbones, eyes, and hair were more than coincidence. As best as I can tell, they are seventh cousins! This has been one of the best geneology surprises that I have had. I hope this story doesn't bore you too much. And any help on the Gwaltney's and VanZant's (any spelling) will be appreciated. I will be happy to share information. Susie Overstreet199@verizon.net
Thanks Karen, I really appreciate your listing them all. I wish I could find the connection with my John Myers but it won't be this time. Thanks again. Jeff: I'm very interested in your post with information about the Harshbarger's from Botetourt County. Before I get into a lot of detail about my interest in the Harshbarger family, I would like to know if you descend from them and if you have much information on them? To my knowledge I do not descend from them; however, my JAMES family from Botetourt County seems to have been closely associated with the Harshbargers, both in VA and IN. I look forward to your reply. Jim Messersmith Rockville, VA At 09:54 AM 3/2/2008 , you wrote: > Jacob M. HARSHBARGER > >H. W. To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to let you know that I have returned from the hospital this evening where my husband is in very serious condition and turned on my web to find that I had quite a list of 140 messages from rootsweb.com. Only one of these was from anyone I knew and the rest I haven't a clue about anyone of them. I certainly don't know what has gone wrong but something has ! I so enjoy get- ting your messages but I can't understand why I suddenly am overwhelmed by 140 at one time and not having a clue about any of them. There were a lot of them from a man's name of Scism. Maybe you could look into this and see what has gone wrong here. Would be interested to know. Respectfully, jane logan saltbox@webtv.net

I have been watching all of this PEFLEY traffic and note that I have a distant cousin Rev. Charles HOAG (b. 1830, Wayne Co., MI or NY - d. 1908) married to LUCINDA CATHERINE PEFLEY (b. 1828 - d. 1894) about 1875. The parents of Charles were born in VT and there is a file in WorldConnect that ends with Charles and Lucinda. The 1880 census has a Charles Hoag with the right parameters married to "S. C. " born in Virginia (father from Virginia) about 1860 which may imply another wife for Charles or an error in birth date. Does anyone have information on Lucinda and Charles and their descendants? Does she connect to this line of PEFLEYs? Thanks Earl

Earl I can say without looking that 99% of anyone named Peffley, Pefley or Peffly, in the USA, is descended from Nicholas Peffley (Pfaffle) and his wife Barbara, who came to Philadelphia Aug 29, 1729 aboard the Mortenhouse. Barbara, who some assign the name "Barne" to, (no proof), was from Bern, Switzerland, and Nicholas was from Eggiwil, also in Kanton Bern. I refer to Barbara as "of Bern". Nicholas died in 1741, (family says by Indian attack) The 1938 Book says 1749, based on Probate of his estate. In 1742 Barbara "the Widow" Peffley remarried to Peter Bichsel (Bixler) a neighbor, and also from Eggiwil. She is the "Mother" of both the Peffley and Bixler Lines out of Lancaster Co. Pa. I don't have a verified reference in my files that matches what you sent, I do however have a Lucinda Peffley who married someone only known as "C." Lucinda was born in 1830, and died June 5, 1925, in Clark Township, Montgomery, Indiana, USA. She is buried in the Stoner Cemetery, Clark Township, Montgomery, Indiana, USA, and the headstones are the source of the above data. Could this be the correct one? HI Karen, Do you have any idea of who Jacob & Sarah's children were? From what I can gather from below: 1783 Jacob Moyer bought 269 acres 1785 Jacob lists 11 people in one dwelling and 4 other cabins 1786 Jacob gave 1 acre of land to the church 1787 personal property tax list: 2 males 16-21 1794 personal property tax list: 3 males 16 + 1795 Will Book - so he must have diedl Any tips on the children is great appreciated. Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Carty<mailto:soulard2@sbcglobal.net> To: vaboteto@rootsweb.com<mailto:vaboteto@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2008 2:45 PM Subject: [VABOTETO] JACOB MOYER AND BARBARA MILLER Looking for the parents of JACOB MOYER mentioned in notes below. Any help will be appreciated. On Sunday, 10 July 1783, Jacob Moyer bought 269 acres on the north and east side of the winding James River in Botetourt County, from Michael and Catherine Carnes. In an Enumeration of Botetourt County, these three families appear close together on page 9, all belonging to Captain Pryors Militia Company as of 8 February 1785 Jacob Moyer, with a total of 11 people in one dwelling, with 4 other cabins; Michael Moyer, with a total of 5 people in one dwelling, with 3 other cabins; and Henry Boughman, who had 5 people and only one building, his dwelling place. (Tenth Legion Tithables pg 61 shows Jacob Moier, & Jacob 21 & Henry, 1N as part of No 14 East Dist, Capt. Jacob Kiser's Company). "The Virginia Germans" Klaus Wust, University Press of Virginia, 1975 p. 99 In 1785 Jacob Moyers was living in one "dwelling cabin" with eleven persons of his household. . . . . Yet, one year later Jacob and Sarah Moyers gave land to the community of Dutch Calvinists and Lutherans on Locust Bottom for the first church. "A Seed-Bed of the Republic" Robert Douthat Stoner, Roanoke Historical Society 1962 p 375 . . . . . some of the early congregations were composed of members of each (Lutheran, Reformed and Presbyterian). This was certainly true of "Zion" or "Locust Bottom" church. The deed to the lot (which is recorded in Deed Book 3, page 384 of the Clerk's Office of Botetourt County) states that it was from Jacob and Sarah Moyers (Myers) of the first part and "the Community of Duch Calvinists & Lutherans, a settlement near the head of James River," of the second part. The deed was made on April 11, 1786, and conveys 1 acre of land, part of the present home place of Moyers "the same to be appropriated for building a church upon and a burying place; and on the said acre of land is now a yard paled in for the purposes above mentioned, the said lot 20 poles by 8". A marginal notation on the deed book where this deed is recorded shows the delivery thereof after recordation to Peter Circle, whose descendants are Presbyterians. This was the first Church ever built in Botetourt Co! unty in which the Lutherans participated, although it was not a part of the Lutheran Botetourt Charge. the new Henkel "Autobiography. . ." ". . .I planned to make a trip to Stony Creek in Shenandoah County, Virginia. I made my first call at the home of Preacher Jacob Zink who was just then making a start in the work of the ministry. I held a German sermon in his home on the second Sunday in December 1782, and the following Wednesday I preached for the first time in the old Roders (Rader's) Church. Jacob Zink's brother Peter accompanied me to that point. Jacob Mayer, the German schoolteacher in the neighborhood of Stony Creek, had come and urged me to go with him to his house. Within several hours he had made an appointment for me for the next afternoon. After the sermon I rode home with Peter Zink to his father's [father of Jacob and Peter Zink was still living at that time]. The next morning I rode in company with him and his single sister to a schoolhouser five miles from Millerstadt. . ."
