    1. [VABOTETO] McCall Family
    2. I am researching the McCall family who lived in the New River area ca 1740 until the 1780s and beyond in Botetourt and then Fincastle County, then possibly Washington County, VA. Is there anyone onlist who is researching this family? I am interested in finding the parents of a James McCall born 10 Mar 1782 in Botetourt who eventually moved to Washington County, Ohio ca 1800 and then on to Gallia County, Ohio in 1804 where he died in 1838. Where might I find abstracts of wills for this family? Thanking you in advance. 2. One correction on the children of Jacob Moyer. Catherine is really Catherine Myers, daughter of Jacob and Christina (Suster) Myers. She did marry Thomas Cessler (Sesler). These are my great great great grandparents and we have tracked them from Botetourt County to Fayette County, Ohio where sometime between 1815-1817 they moved to join her brother Samuel. 3. That's excellent feedback. I see that my Nancy Moyer who m. Matthias Smythe is also part of your Jacob's family. I will take both out of my list. I even had a note to myself that Christina did not fit if you looked closely at the dates. This is a very confusing family; too many Jacob Moyer (Myer, Myers, Meyers, Moirs) in the same part of Virginia at the same time. My desire is to tie him to some parents. I have a lot of notes and speculation that he came from Pennsylvania makes the most sense. Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.botetourt/2442.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My records show (subject to independent review) that William Ewing married Elizabeth Milford, and they had Findley/Finley Ewing who married Jane Porter. Findley and Jane (Porter) Ewing had Robert Ewing, and Robert married Mary Baker (daughter of Caleb Baker and Martha Brooks). Robert and Mary (Baker) Ewing had a large family, including sons named Baker Ewing and (apparently) John Baker Ewing (who MAY have also married a Martha Baker....but more research is needed on that). In addition, Findley and Jane (Porter) Ewing also had a son named Charles Ewing, and Charles married Martha Baker, yet another daughter of Caleb and Martha (Brooks) Baker. One of their sons was named Caleb Baker. The above family was in Bedford Co., VA, so I suspect that your line comes from one of these "branches" of the Ewing family. "Legend" has it that there were six Ewing brothers in Scotland and then Ireland, and that they fought on the side of William of Orange. The Ewings in Bedford Co., VA, and POSSIBLY the Ewings in Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA (where Caleb Baker lived), were supposedly from one or more of those brothers. 3. Susie, Enjoyed your story -- we had one similar to yours in our family KAREN KING LAVORE LIVE LONG & PROSPER \/ ----- Original Message ----- From: Susie Overstreet<mailto:overstreet199@verizon.net> To: vaboteto@rootsweb.com<mailto:vaboteto@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 03, 2008 7:01 PM Subject: [VABOTETO] Gwaltney and VanZant (Vansandt) interest and a story I am looking for 2 different families in the Botetourt area. On my father's side, my great-grandmother was Mary Ann Gwaltney born September 9, 1853. She was the daughter of Albert Gwaltney born about 1822 in Botetourt County. He was the son of Zachariah Gwaltney born June 19, 1797 in the Amsterdam section of Botetourt County. I would appreciate any information on this line. On my mother's side, I am interested in any and all VanZandt, VanZant, VanSandt connections, specifically Jane VanSandt who was married to Elijah Morris on December 17, 1801. The marriage took place in Rockbridge County, but I have found several references to Isaiah VanZandt in Botetourt County. I believe Isaiah to be either father or uncle to Jane. Since the list is slow, I will take this time to share a story. I grew up showing horses. My father and I traveled all over the southeastern United States and we met some wonderful people. One couple, I came to think of as my godparents. They live way back in the boonies off the paved road in Franklin County, Tennessee. I still spend part of my vacations with them, but I spent weeks with them as a child. I have always considered them family. I have always looked like my mother's side of the family with dark hair, high cheekbones, and black brown eyes. My "godmother" has these same (not unusual) physical characteristics. When we would go places together, everyone assumed that she was my mother. And we would laugh together and enjoy the moment. I have only been interested in geneology for a few years and I spent the first year working on my father's side. It wasn't until my mother made it clear (insert temper tantrum) that she would like to know a little bit more about her family that I started working on that side. After much struggling, I found a thread that lead to the VanZant line. When I found the VanZant thread, I kept thinking to my self that for an unusual name, this one sounded real familiar, but I never could place it. (My fiancee tried to tell me it was the Lynard Skynard connection to Ronnie VanZant.) Two weeks later, while on vacation visiting my "godparents", I realized why. When we made the turn onto the road that leads out to their farm (which had been in my godmothers' family for years), the state workers were putting up the new street signs. She lives on Van Zant Bend Road! I had chills! I just about flew out of the car when we pulled up at their house. And after I convinced her that I hadn't lost my mind, she and I went for a walk in the family graveyard which I had driven past 2-3 times a year for almost 40 years. Her Vanzant's had come from Pennsylvania down through Virginia to North Carolina and across to Tennessee. I collected all kinds of names and dates, and when I got home, I started comparing my godmother and my mother's ancestors. It turns out that the cheekbones, eyes, and hair were more than coincidence. As best as I can tell, they are seventh cousins! This has been one of the best geneology surprises that I have had. I hope this story doesn't bore you too much. And any help on the Gwaltney's and VanZant's (any spelling) will be appreciated. I will be happy to share information.
