Pam, You need to get the Index of Deeds for Grantees for your family member's surname for the period prior to the sale date and then just search down the list until you find the listing for the original purchase. The Index will then give you the Book and Page number for that deed and you can order it from the clerk of the court. I believe this family is part of the earlier generations in my Custer family. They might be descendants of Abraham Custer in Botetourt but I haven't studied this line. I know there was a Abraham Custer but I'm not that familiar with this line. I know there was one Abraham Custer who left Botetourt and went to Warren Co., Tn. I'd like to help you if I can. I have gotten most of this information from the "Botetourt County, Virginia Heritage Book". I will let you know if there are any additional sources to each individual fact. I have: Elnora TEAFORD married to Emmett DWIER. No other info for him. Elnora's parents - father = Rowley H. TEAFORD (aka Roy) b. 12/17/1858 (could be 1853) d. 3/12/1914. Buried at Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Eagle Rock. (Birth, death info from cemetery listing on internet and provided by Ruth Hale and Glenna G. Garner Lucado. The above mentioned book indicates that Rowley was married to Margaret MCNULTY in 1879 and then to Sally Betty CLAPSADDLE on 6/21/1892 in Clifton Forge, VA. Sally Betty is also buried in Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Eagle Rock. From cemetery info provided by Ruth Hale and Glenna G. Garner Lucado and also from the above mentioned book, she was born 6/1870 and died 4/20/1934. If my records are correct, Roy had 12 children; 3 with Margaret and 9 with Sally Betty. Let me know if you would like the children's names, etc. Lisa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My 3rd great grandparents are John Lewis Custer who went by Lewis Custer and Rebecca Shawver. Lewis Custer is the son of John Custer and Mary "Polly" Smiley daughter of James Smiley and wife unknown. They were married in Botetourt County, Va. 19 Jun 1839. By the 1850 census they removed to Warren County, Tn. In the 1860 census they moved to Union County, Illinois where they both died in 1863. In the 1820 Botetourt County census the following are listed: John Custard; Adam Sawver; Andrew Shawver; James Smiley; Daniel Smiley; George Smiley; and William Smiley. I am looking for the parents of Rebecca Shawver. Any information would greatly be appreciated. Marianne Dillow
