Helen (and other Botetourt researchers), Fincastle Co., VA was formed from Botetourt Co. in 1772 and abolished in 1777. Records from Fincastle were transferred to Montgomery Co., VA. There are some wonderful historical maps prepared by the late John R. Hildebrand available for $6 from the Roanoke Valley Historical Society (I've seen these maps for sale in other locations as well). County maps available are: Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Fincastle (this map is only $3.50), Franklin, Montgomery, Rockbridge, Roanoke and Wythe. These maps are on the average about 30" X 25". You can call the Roanoke H.S. at 540-342-5770, and they will transfer you over to their Museum store to place orders. I have most of these maps and have shrink-wrapped them and placed red markers on my ancestors property. They don't list all property owners, but I've been lucky to have many of mine listed on these maps. Hope this helps! Leigh Blount
In the Augusta/Rockbridge Co court records abstracted by Lyman Chalkley there is an item dated 1772 that lists the men who received allottments of land for service in the colonial wars with the notation that the land is in Fincastle county. I have read that that land is now in Botetourt Co, but I wondered what the boundaries of Fincastle were. Was it the same as Botetourt is now? Also, would anyone know whether there are any land ownership maps for that time period and where I would get them. I could use any advice as to what county I should be searching in for the deed and tax records. Thanks for any help on this. Helen ....Researching FORD, CAILE, EAKIN
Well, I've watched quietly for a day or so... time to jump in. In the Spring of 1746, Peter WRIGHT and his brother Thomas migrated to the Virginia frontier from Long Island, NY. Thomas settled on the Cowpasture River, Peter on Jackson's River at the mouth of Pott's Creek, where the city of Covington now stands. Peter and his wife, Jane HUGHART had the following children: Descendants of Peter WRIGHT, Sr. 1 Peter ? WRIGHT, Sr. b: Abt 1712 in Oyster Bay, Queens Co., NY d: Abt 1793 in Botetourt Co., VA 2 Sarah ? WRIGHT 2 Rebecca ? WRIGHT 2 Mary ? WRIGHT 2 Martha ? WRIGHT 2 Jane (Jennie) WRIGHT 2 Agnes (Nancy) WRIGHT 2 Elizabeth ? WRIGHT 2 Thomas ? WRIGHT 2 William ? WRIGHT b: in Botetourt Co., VA d: in MO 2 John ? WRIGHT 2 Peter ? WRIGHT, Jr. 2 Rachel ? WRIGHT b: Abt 1750 2 James ? WRIGHT b: Abt 1751 in Covington, Botetourt (now Alleghany) Co., VA d: 24 Jun 1825 in Bourbon Co., KY 10 Mar 1773, at Botetourt Co., VA, Court Order Book 1772-76/147 James Wright was declared the father of a "bastard child" and ordered to pay maintenance. James and Peter Wright acknowledged this in Court Order Book 1772-76/148. That child was Jane M. MULLIN, d/o Margaret M. MULLIN. She seems to have disappeared. Does anyone out there have any MULLINs from Botetourt/Augusta/Alleghany Counties? Looking for ANY info on the Mary PIERCE who married William DODD 1792 or 1782, according to two different sources. Is this the same Mary PIERCE who was bound to Robert CRAIG as a child in 1779 when her father Daniel PIERCE died and the same one who had a child out of wedlock in 1783?
