    1. [VABOTETO-L] Early Lee Families
    2. Vern
    3. Good morning all - My research has led me to conclude that there were two Lee families in Botetourt Co in the late 1700's. One family consisted of Henry Lee, Stephen Lee, Thomas Lee, Andrew Lee, and possibly others. The second family arrived in 1793 with Zachariah Lee as its partiarch. His children were Jonathan, Elizabeth, Zachariah Jr, William, and "Polly." By 1810 the first family had disappeared from the official records. Two questions: 1) What was the connection between these two families? 2) Where did the first family go? Thanks for any assistance you may offer. Vern vstinson@ctaz.com

    2. Joanne Mello
    3. Hi Botetourt Co. Researchers: I just made a fantastic discovery while browsing Rockbridge Co.'s GENWEB site. They have scanned in the ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY MARRIAGE BONDS 1778-1801 & I actually found an ancestor there. Even tho his marriage had been recorded in Botetourt County, apparently his wife was from Rockbridge Co. so the bond was signed there. It might pay you to look @ this site since Rockbridge was formed from Botetourt in 1778. Here's the URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/rockbridge/license.html Good Luck! Joanne Joanne A. 3. Hello, My name is Wanda Nance and I have just joined this digest. Has anyone found any MINTONS in the 1700s in this county? I have a PHILLIP MINTON who married in 1776 in Washington Co.Va. and died there in 1805. Do not know where he was before Washington Co.Va. Also do not know who his parents were but believe his father was JOHN MINTON who bought land in Washington Co.Va. in 1781. PHILLIP is suppost to have been born in Virginia. I am looking for all MINTONS in Virginia in the 1700s in the counties formed BEFORE Washington Co.Va.[1777] was formed. I would very much like the find the names of his parents. William Henry Smith was raised by his mother and a stepfather whose surname was LEE. We would like to know if William Henry SMITH's father was a casualty of the Civil War. First, though, we need to know who his father was:>). Any suggestions???? I would greatly appreciate any help you could give. Thanks! Karen klws@socketis.net Genealogists never die, they just lose their census.

    2. Joanne Mello
    3. Has anyone ever tried to get a search of title of property in Botetourt County? In CA we have Title Companies where title searches are done. Is there anything equivalent to that in Bote. Co? As you know VA doesn't have Townships, Ranges, & Sections such as much of the other US - therefore searching back through property descriptions in order to sort out famililes can be somewhat difficult, to say the least! I can't believe that when a piece of property is sold in this part of VA one has to search through rods & chains & bends in the creek & clumps of trees to make sure that the property is free & clear of liens, etc. If other VA researchers can shed some light on this situation, I'd appreciate hearing from them. Thanks in advance. Joanne Joanne A. Smith Mello jomello@innercite.com

    3. Hello, I'm new to the list. I'm trying to find the names of the parents and siblings of my ggg-grandfather, Asa Canterbury, who was born in Botetourt Co. Virginia. It is possible that he was related to the Cantrall and Graham families, but so far I can't verify this. Any information on the Canterbury family is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Chloe Patton patton@eskimo.com 1. ASA CANTERBURY was born March 07, 1788 in Botetourt Co. VA, and died October 16, 1856 in Sangamon Co. IL-Buried Canterbury Cemetery, Cantral, IL. He married MARGARET "PEGGY" HORNBACK 1809 in Aberdeen, Brown, OH, daughter of ABRAHAM HORNBACK and ELIZABETH TRUMBO. Notes for ASA CANTERBURY: Asa Canterbury's father died when Asa was a child, and his mother moved to Bath county Kentucky. It is thought that she was somehow connected to the Cantrall family. When Asa married, Margaret "Peggy" Horback, his wife, lived in Fleming county, on the opposite side of the Licking River. There being opposition to their marriage, they went to Aberdeen, Ohio, and were there married. It could there be solemnized on short notice, as no license was required by the laws of Ohio at that time, and runaway wedding parties from Kentucky were quite popular. They had four children in Bath county, and moved to the Fleming side of the Licking River, where they had three. The family moved to Sangamon county, Illinois, arriving in the fall of 1826, in what is now Fancy Creek Township, where they had four more children. Asa and his family travelled with Levi Cantrall and his family. Children of ASA CANTERBURY and MARGARET HORNBACK are: i. ISAAC T.2 CANTERBURY, b. 1810, Montgomery Co. KY; d. 2. Joanne Mello
    3. I have the book titled BOTETOURT COUNTY HISTORY BEFORE 1900 THROUGH COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS. It appears to be pretty complete, but I can't find any of my CRAWFORD families listed except for those listed in the MCCOY-EVANS-CRAWFORD cemetery 4 mi. W of Eagle Rock off Rt. 615 on C. Deisher Farm. I'm looking for burial site for (all died in Bote. Co.): WILLIAM CRAWFORD d. 1835 & his wife MARGARET KILPATRICK CRAWFORD death date unknown; SAMUEL F. CRAWFORD d. 1867; JAMES CRAWFORD d. abt 1875; SARAH CRAWFORD b. abt 1794 d.?; ANDREW K. CRAWFORD d. 1866 wife SUSANNA SHAFER. It is possible that one SAMUEL F. HAMBRICK (d. 1892) is buried with these Crawfords. It could be that not all cemeteries were covered in the book mentioned above. If not, just where would the other cemeteries be? I'd be interested to know about some other cemeteries that might be on farms that were not included in the book. Any help here is appreciated. Joanne Joanne A. Smith Mello jomello@innercite.com

    1. [VABOTETO-L] Age of consent??
    2. Mark
    3. At what age would a young lady need someone to consent to her marriage in the late 1700s to early 1800s in VA? I have numerous marriage records with the father, mother, or an older brother consenting to the marriage; or someone stating that the woman is over 21. Unfortunately, I don't have birthdates on these folks. Can I narrow the birth date down by assuming that if someone had to consent, she was less than 21 years old? Thanks, Mark
