    3. Peter Whooley (of Botetourt County) paid to the Governor of the Commonwealth of VA 2 pounds sterling for 400 acres of land in KY, about 1778-1779. In another transaction, he purchased land using "five shillings Current money of the State of Virginia," and a "Gilding of paying therefor the Rent of one pepper Corn on Lady's day next..." Could someone please tell me how these amounts inter-relate, and perhaps their approximate equivalents today? Curious, too, as to when and what Lady's day was. Thank you, Bryce Stevens

    1. Re: Trout family
    2. Mary: The following information is from the Botetourt Bicentennial Souvenir Program dated June 21-27, 1970. "Troutville - In 1881 this area had no name. The railroad came through and a station was built. There were three houses then which were occupied by John, Jim and George Trout so it was called Troutville. It became an important shipping center in the 1890's. Before the railroad came through, the stage ran from Blue Ridge to Fincastle and stopped at the Trout's to get water. The post office and a blacksmith shop were here also. In the 1880's three canneries were built. About this time a factory to make tin cans was also build. This building is now Southern States Feed Store. In 1924 Highway 11 was improved and re-routed. In 1951 Troutville was incorporated and is now a rapidly growing and prosperous community." I have a lot of Trout(t)s in my data base but none that you mention. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Good luck in your search. Lynda Troutt Murphy

    3. Can anyone help with me with the family of Archibald GOFF, b. prob. abt. 1780 (according to the 1850 census) and his wife Polly, b. prob. abt. 1795, according to the census. I found a marriage record for them in the Bedford Marriage Bonds which says that they were married there 29 Mar. 1810, and that she was the dau. of Battaile HARRISON. The 1850 Census, though, has them living in Botetourt County. I would like to find more about the family, if possible. Was Archibald married twice??? He was 15 years older than Polly. Thanks. Kathy.

    2. Mary Lucado
    3. Andrew C. Trout (born between 1780-1790 & died between 1843-1849) came to Botetourt Co. with his wife Sarah (Sally) Reed. They were married on June 28, 1821 in Rockbridge Co; she was the daughter of Michael and Catherine Reed. Depending on which record you view, Andrew was either born in Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Germany. Does anyone know which is correct? I know there was a small group of Trouts in Augusta Co. around this time. Andrew and Sarah had the following children: 1. James M. Trout, b. Sept. 1823, alive in 1900, m. Martha Jane Camper in 1849 Bot. Co. 2. Andrew J. Trout, b. 1826, m. Elizabeth Selvey in 1850 Bot. Co. 3. Catherine A. Trout, b. 1829 4. John A. Trout, b. 1833 5. George Trout, b. 1837 6. Sarah Trout, b. Aug. 15, 1840, d. Mar. 4, 1913, m. a Bishop. 7. Lucinda Trout, b. Sept. 1844, d. after June 1928, m. Jacob Dooley in 1866 Bot. Co. Any info on the above people would be appreciated. Thanks, Mary p.s. Does any one know how the town of Troutville got its name????? Numerous members of this family lived there and next door in Amsterdam.

    3. I am seeking info on Joseph Dooley, born ca. 1810; he was born in either Botetourt or Bedford Co. On July 11, 1829 he married Mary (Polly) Bishop, dau. of John. I have not been able to locate any deed or will records that would give a clue as to Joseph's parents. Tax records from the time period have been no help either. Joseph and Mary had the following children: 1. John Dooley, b. 1833 2. Lewis Dooley, b. 1835 3. James A. Dooley, b. 1837 4. Jacob Dooley, b. Aug. 1839, d. June 1928 5. Edward Dooley, b. 1841 6. Marshall Dooley, b. 1843 7. Ann E. Dooley, b. 1845 8. Ellen E. Dooley, b. 1847 9. Henry Dooley, b. 1849 Joseph is on the 1850 Botetourt Co. census, but disappears after this. Polly Dooley is listed as a widow in the will/estate documents for her father John Bishop. If anyone has any info on Joseph, I would love to know! Thanks, Mary

    1. Faught/Fought/Vogt
    2. Mary Lucado
    3. Hello, I am searching for any info on the Faught family of Botetourt Co. My line starts with a John Fought whose daughter Elizabeth married John Bishop on June 23, 1809 in Bot. Co. There is a record for a John Fought marrying a Jane Stull on April 7, 1794 in Bot. Co. but I do not know if this is the same John. Does anyone have any information on the Fought/Faughts in Botetourt? The line originates with a John Paul Vogt (listed in Augusta records as John Belfaut also) who was born in Germany ca. 1681. Thanks, Mary

    1. Re: Botetourt Hotel
    2. "Hotel Botetourt was built in 1851 by Mr. Jacob A. Haney. It had twenty-three rooms. Among the famous people who have registered there are General Robert E. Lee and Jubal A. Early. John Robinson of the Robinson circus family was born in the hotel. It has had numerous owners and is presently owned by Mr. C.C. McDilda." This information was taken from the Botetourt Bicentennial Book that was published in 1970. I am sure that if you contact the Botetourt Historical Society that they can provide you with more information and probably some photographs. Lynda Troutt Murphy

    1. BURKS/ REYNOLDS/ HUMPHRIES
    2. Squeely450
    3. I am looking for Nancy BURKS, my ggg grandmother, b. abt 1775. She took up with Uriah HUMPHRIES about 1794 and I have reason to believe that BURKS (or BURKES) was her married name and that they met in Botetourt Co. VA, where Uriah is known to have lived for many years. He was married to Sarah REYNOLDS at the time they met. They went to Clarke CO GA and Sarah divorced Uriah about 1799. Nancy had three daughters at the time. Until recently I have been looking for Nancy in the Clarke/Elbert/Green/Jackson co area of GA, since there are many Burks in that area. But it seems more probable that the couple met in VA and took off for GA when they discovered that they liked each other. Nancy's children were named: Louisa Lydia (Leddy) b. abt 1794, Mary Jane (Polly), Mariah, Joseph Benjamin, Elijah Uriah, Martha Jane, Presley Thornton, Madison Tignor, and Julia Ann b. 1812. (Joseph named after Uriah's father, Elihah named after Uriah and possibly a grandfather on father's side, but Presley Thornton has always made me think there was a Thornton link.) Nancy lived out her life in Clarke Co. GA and died there after 1850. Thanks. Ola Humphries Houston TX

    1. Justices BOYER, Thomas and John. Clerk Henry Boyer.
    2. Lctdugan
    3. I am hopeful that someone will be able to tell me: In what area did these Justices BOYER practice in 1773 and 1774. Here is a statement of their appointment. >From Botetourt County History Before 1800, published by the Botetourt County Historical Society Centennial Publications Committee - no date listed for publication. "The first justices for Botetourt County were appointed on December 22, 1769, and were confirmed on Tuesday, February 13, 1770 . . . quote Court Book 1770, Part 1, Page 1: `Appointed Kings Justices for keeping ordinances and statutes of the Kingdom and laws of the colony, at the house of Robert Breckenridge were Andrew Lewis, Richard Woods, Robert Breckinridge, William Preston, John Bowyer, Israel Christian, John Maxwell, James Trimble, Benjamin Hawkins, David Robinson, William Fleming, George Skillern, and Benjamin Estell.' The first seven of these justices (through John Maxwell) constituted a quorum, which meant one of these men had to be present when the Court sat, however others could be included to make up a panel. Those present on this day were: Andrew Lewis, Robert Breckinridge, William Preston, Israel Christian and James Trimble. On March 2, 1770, William Ingles and John Howard were added to the quorum and Phillip Love, James Robertson, William Christian, William Herbert, John Montgomery, Stephen Trigg, Robert Poage, Walter Crockett, James McGavock, Francis Smith, Andrew Woods, William Matthews, John Bowman, William McKee and Anthony Bledsloe were appointed justices. Added to this list on July 17, 1771 were James Thompson, John Stewart, John Robinson, John Van Bibber and Matthew Arbuckle. Newly appointed justices on June 11, 1773 were Richard May, Thomas Bowyer, William Madison, Patrick Lockhart, Henry Paullin, James Templeton, Samuel Lewis, Andrew Boyd, William McClenachan, John Murray, William Heugart, Henry Smith, Andrew Donnelly and James McAfee. On May 30, 1774 the list consisted of Andrew Lewis, John Boyer, John Maxwell, James Trimble, David Robinson, William Fleming, George Skillern, Benjamin Estill, Phillip Love, Andrew Woods, John Bowman, William McKee, Samuel Lewis and Richard May, who consituted a quorum; with William Madison, John Murray, William McClenachan, James Henderson and Andrew Donnelly as gentlemen justices; and the Rev. Smyth, Clerk. Lonnie
