Can anyone give me some information on Maj. HENRY WALKER of Botetourt Co.? I believe he served in the War of 1812. This is a new reference for me. He is listed as an ancestor of Gov. JAMES MADISON HARVEY of Kansas. Gov. Harvey is supposedly descended from the same line and I'm trying to find the HARVEY connection. Any help would be appreciated. Sandra

Hi again, I am also looking for information about my g-grandfather, Rev. Samuel POGUE/POAGUE. He had a shoe-making shop in Fincastle in the late 1800's. I have been told by a family member and by someone with the Botetourt County History Before 1900 Through Cemetery Records, that he is buried in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery in Fincastle. I am currently working on obtaining that book and the other one that I posted about - a family member mentioned that there are several other Pogues from our family buried there (his wife, Lucy Jane BANISTER POGUE and maybe some of their children). Samuel POGUE/POAGUE was African-American and I have found him in the census records back to 1870 in Fincastle. I have records indicating that his father was an Edward STEPHENS (b. VA), but his mother is listed as unknown. There has been a long standing story in our family that Samuel POGUE did not take the slave master's name - which would infer that he had been enslaved. So, my first hypothesis is that this Edward STEPHENS was a slave owner - though I have no proof of that, it is just a place to start... I am not sure whether Edward STEPHENS lived in Botetourt County, but I will assume so for now... So my question is do any Botetourt County researchers out there have information about an Edward Stephens who owned slaves? If so, do you have any details that you would be willing to share? I am particularly interested in identifying my g-grandfather's mother and any siblings if at all possible. Any and all ideas and leads will be most appreciated. Thanks. Verna Bullock Lewis
