Dan, The earlier spelling of the name Vinyard/Vineyard is Weinert. This seems to be distinct from the Wenger variations. Richard R. I am trying to sharpen up my understanding of the Jacob B. Gish marriage. If there is anyone on this group who could comment on the following I would appreciate it. Also, if there is a Gish email group that I could post this material to I would appreciate hearing about it. I have seen one GEDCOM file that gives Anna's father as Isaac White Vinyard. Is there anyone who knows the source of this information? Many thanks. Dan Wenger The assumption that I am working on is that Anna Wingert who married Jacob Gish is the daughter of Martin Wenger/Wingert of Franklin Co. Pa. I have only circumstantial evidence to go on here. 1) Martin's family was from around Jonestown, Swatara Twp. Lancaster Co. (now Lebanon Co.) Pa. The Gish family was from Lebanon Twp. Lancaster Co. Pa., presumably this was just south of Jonestown. Martin's sister Judith Wenger married Martin Funk and lived just north of the town of Lebanon, presumably in Lebanon Twp.. Martin moved to Franklin Co. (then Cumberland Co.) Pa. quite early (by 1775) and settled just north of Chambersburg. He was the first Mennonite Deacon in Franklin Co. 2) One of Martin's sons, Joseph Wenger, went to Botetourt Co. Va. from Franklin Co. Pa. and his descendants are still there. 3) A daughter of Jacob Gish and Anna Wingert, Elizabeth Gish, married Christian Wenger/Wingert who I believe is a nephew of Martin Wenger/Wingert, ie. Elizabeth married her second cousin. 4) I believe that Jacob Gish went to Va. from Lebanon Twp. Lancaster Co. Pa. via Franklin Co. Pa. and probably met Anna there. I believe that they were married about 1786 or 1787 in Pa. He was in the Fed. census of 1790 in Cumberland Co. Pa. He is reported to have moved to Daleville, Va. in 1792 with family. 5) George Houk, the father of Sophia Houk who married Christian Gish, was a neighbor of Martin Wenger/Wingert in Franklin Co. Pa. There was thus an opportunity for Jacob and Anna to have met in Franklin Co. Pa. George Houk's grandson Jacob Gish and Martin Wenger's daughter Anna could well have met due to George and Martin living as neighbors. 6) There are no other known Wenger/Wingert families in the area that Anna could be from. There is the Christian Vinyard family and Anna's name has been given as Anna Vinyard, but the death record for Jacob Gish in Botetourt Co. Va gives that he married first Anna Wingert and secondly Catharine (Stover) Sizer. Jacob did use the name Vinyard in his will. There is an interesting mystery here. The name Wenger is usually given as meaning a mountain meadow or alp. The Wengers were thought to have originally come from such locations in Switzerland, ie. Wengen, Switzerland. But vinyard has also been given for the meaning of the name Wenger. So the mystery is, is the Christian Vinyard family of Va. really a Wenger family? Since the town of Vinton is named after the Vinyard family one wonders if the name of the town comes ultimately from the name Wenger. I would also be interested in the membership and or cemetery records, I believe that you are referring to the Mt.. Union Methodist Church at the intersection of Route 630 and Route 779. The Church appears locked up tight and not in use. I believe that this is also the same "church" and cemetery as "Edzler's Meeting House and Glebe Graveyard. Many members of the Bryan McDonald family are supposed to be buried there but when I visited there were just a few. Is the Glebe graveyard somewhere else? -----Original Message----- From: Karen Smith <klws@socket.net> To: VABOTETO-L@rootsweb.com <VABOTETO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, November 02, 1998 12:40 AM Subject: Mountain Union Church >I am trying to locate membership records for the Mountain Union >Church in the Fincastle area. I am seeking information about Peter Reilly who died in Botetourt Co, Va on June 14, 1812. Are death records available from that area for that period? Is someone able to look such records up for me or tell me where to reach them? Thank you Barry Reilly
Note where the land is: For example Roanoke County was formed in 1830 (I believe) so if the land is now in what is Roanoke county, a sale of 1849 would be recorded in Roanoke county, not Botetourt Co. I am trying to locate membership records for the Mountain Union Church in the Fincastle area. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have about where to locate these records. Thanks! Karen klws@socket.net Genealogists never die, they just lose their census.
On Pg 35 of "Out From the Blue Ridge" by Morris S. Kessler there is a paragraph pertaining to my BOWER family that I need to check into. In summary it saids that there was some land sold in 1849 from the Bower family to a John Bower. William Kessler had married a Catherine Bower who was deceased but he had signed as heir. I believe that my GEORGE BOWER Bower was Catherine's brother. The 1849 land sell listed the brothers and sisters. WHERE CAN I FIND THIS LAND SELL? I have already tried the Botetourt Co. Clerk of Court office. Thanks for your help. Debbie in SC at dejo@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Hello, If anyone has the book "Botetourt County, Virginia, Children," by Charles T. Burton, would you please tell me the page number with DENTONs on it. I have a copy of the page without the page number! Sincerely, Pat Patricia Smith smithpat@iex.net
William Bowen (s/o John Bowen Jr. & Rachel Mathews; gr-s/o John Bowen Sr. & Lily McIlhaney) married Elizabeth Smith, 1795 Botetourt Co 1795. Had siblings - John III, Arthur (died young), Moses (probably died in Rev. War), Anne, Elizabeth & Rebecca. What happened to William & Elizabeth? Where did they go? Some say they stayed in Virginia. (Some evidence that this William Bowen was in middle TN later.) Who were their children? If any? Would appreciate any info on William and Elizabeth (Smith) Bowen, and their descendants.
Hi Charles I have had success with the courthouse directly. Just write to the address below and request a copy. These are copies of the original documents. Include name, date of death, and this... Valuation of estate ret. March 1777. It does'nt usually take long. Also include enough money to cover copying and postage costs. Copies are 50 cents per page. $3.00 should be enough. Hope this helps. Dear Fellow Researchers, Since my last postings I have confirmed that my g-grandmother's (Lucy Jane BANISTER POGUE) parents were Jane HILL BANISTER and Jenkins BANISTER (Sr. ?). They were FPOC (Free People of Color) listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Botetourt. Because of there large age difference, I believe that Jane HILL was Jenkins BANISTER's 2nd wife. There are BANISTER's in the household in 1850 and 1860 who seem too old to be Jane's children and too young to be Jenkins' siblings - this also seems to point to a prior wife. In addition, I believe that a Julia HILL in the household in 1850 must be Jane's sister. I feel very fortunate to have gotten back this far on this line. I would be most appreciative if anyone has any information on any of these people or information on any relatives that they would be willing to share. Verna Bullock Lewis
I recently found my connection to John WEBB father of John and Jesse WEBB. My line is through Jesse born about 1766, possibly in Virginia, and Anna McMURTRY born 1768 in Botetourt, Bedford Co., Virginia. Anna was the daugher of Joseph McMURTRY and Susannah PATTON. Joseph born about 1733, possibly in New Jersey. His parents were Joseph McMURTRY DOB 1685 in Dalmelling Ayrshire, Scotland and Ann BOONE DOB 1692 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Susannah's parents were Jacob PATTON and Jennet B.. Susannah PATTON and Joseph McMURTRY were married in Bedford, Virginia on 8-27-1759. Thomas WEBB was the son of Jesse WEBB and Anna McMURTRY. He was born in 1785 in State of Franklin (can someone explain this to me?) and he married Eleanor Penelope "Nellie" McMURTRY who was in 1796 in Caney Branch, Green Co., North Carolina/Tennessee. One of their sons was William WEBB born 1825 in Jefferson Co. Tennessee. William married Martha A. CLIFTON. Martha was born in 1836, place unknown. One of their sons was James Alexander WEBB born in 1853 in Jefferson Co. Tennessee. The family later moved to Cherokee Co. Alabama. In 1878 James married Sarah Agnes CLIFTON born in about 1852. My information says that Sarah's parents were Aaron CLIFTON born in 1812 and an Unnamed Indian Woman. I have no place of birth for Sarah or her parents, but the first record I have on them has them in Blount Co. Alabama. I would love to have any information about Sarah's mother. I hate writing down Unknown Indian Woman. Sarah and James were married in 1878 in Alabama. My information is that the BOONE, PATTON, and McMURTRY families were Quakers. It is possible that the WEBB family was also Quaker. The CLIFTON family is a great mystery to me and now that there is a CLIFTON/WEBB marriage before James and Sarah I am even more confused. I know that CLIFTON isn't a real unusual name, but the are all in the same area and I'm willing to grasp a straws. Any information on these families would be appreciated.
