    1. Josiah Markham
    2. A lot has happened this past week that has allowed me to connect myself to Josiah via my grandfather (William Pierce), ggf (Richard Houston), and gggf (John Frank). It's been a long search! Many thanks to Phil Marcum and others who were able to give the info to make this connection. Much of it remains unverified, but now I have a place to start looking and writing for proof. Listed below is what I have so far for my lineage up thru my gf William Pierce Markham. For all of you Josiah Markham descendents, please review and comment. I'll revise it and repost as new or more accurate info becomes available. Thanks again. 1. Sorting out Hugh Allens
    2. Lynne Hundley
    3. Hi All, I'm having trouble sorting out all the Hugh Allens in Augusta/Botetourt 1750-1835. I'm interested in the son of Malcolm Allen (who arrived in 1755, and was permanent about 1762. Hugh was added to tithables then, so was an adult at that point). Has anyone figured out how many Hugh Allens and who they were. I have a bunch of documents, but which documents belongs to which Hugh? Help! Lynne Hundley

    1. PETER BRICKEY
    2. Barbara Eakley
    3. Cletus Lee, I have a little on Peter Brickey, because BRICKEY and JONES are connected to my ANGLE line. In 1787 he was a neighbor of Matthias Snider and Jarret Brickey in Botco. He is on the 1800 tax list for the upper district of Botco. In1807 he was noted as the father of Polly who married James Recard Jones at Botco. 1849 Otey Brickey married Susannah Angle at Montgomery Co, and was identified as the son of Peter. (I'd like to hear from other people who are researching the Angle/Brickey/Jones connections). Hope this helps you. Barbara

    1. Butcher/Turner
    2. Hello! I am in search of my 5th great grandfather, Samuel Butcher (b.abt 1767). He married in Botetourt County,VA in 1790 to Mary Burns, daughter of Isaac Burns. They eventually moved through Kentucky to Grainger County,Tennessee. I have seen one source that said Samuel was the son of William Butcher, of Botetourt. He and Mary were married at the home of one William Butcher. Can anyone help with these families? Regards, Adam Hunley

I thought I would add my two cents on this only in an effort to maybe give an understanding of todays landscape to the above roads names. I'm 30 and do not know what if any of the older names of these roads mght have been. But I do know in my life time that Route 11 and Valley Rd in this area is not the same road. I hope this helps in someway. Darryl Winger

    3. I've been following the thread about McAd Rd => McAdam Rd => 'macadam road'. While wandering over my Street Atlas of Botetourt Co., I came across a feature listed in NW Botetourt County near the Craig Co border called Lee Gap. Can anyone provide any more information about this mountain gap? How did it get its name? Is there a history about it? I've been trying to understand how my Craig Co Lee family and my Catawba Valley Lee family migrated where they did and maybe even when. Because I had always gone between the two valleys using 311, I figured that they must have entered the Craig Valley via Macafee's Gap on the other end of North Mtn. Now I'm not sure. If anyone can provide a clue, thanks! Cletus Lee

    3. I cannot find the reference therefore not sure this is refering to the same road but I believe the Route 11, "Valley Road" " Southwest Turnpike"are all names of the same road. It was a "improved" road and modern road in all the eras. I believe that at some time around and after it was referd to as the "macadam" road. This means that it was graded and had a surface of finely crushed material(stone) that was compacted together for a hard surface....but I can't seem to find out where I heard this info. -----Original Message----- From: Freddie Spradlin <FSPRADLIN@delphi.com> To: VABOTETO-L@rootsweb.com <VABOTETO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, November 18, 1998 11:54 AM Subject: McAd Road >Pollard's 1910 Directory includes an address near Troutville, for McAdam Rd. > >Regards, >Freddie S. > > `Hello, > `Does anyone know by chance where McAd > `road was in Botetourt Co. in the late 1860s? 3. Hello Friends: I came across this entry and thought, like the original sender, that it was worth passing on to other sites in hopes a relative of Civil War soldier Mark Crosby might see it. Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com Resent-Sender: ANDERSONVILLE-L-request@rootsweb.com This was posted on another list. I have posted it here FYI. I would suggest that those of you who belong to other groups might pass it on. I would be devastated if I missed something like this regarding one of my ancestors. Subject: Mark Crosby Jr Discharge paper Civil War From: "Richard H. Greene" <rhunterg@ix.netcom.com> Subject: [Fwd: [OHMARION-L] Found: Original Civil War Discharge Paper] Date: Tue, 03 Nov 1998 14:39:24 -0800 I don't know how to get this posted nation-wide. But, I would like to see this original document returned to a member of the original family. My mother-in-law bought a picture frame at an estate sale in Tucson, AZ. When she took the picture out and removed the cardboard from behind it, a very delicate, old, and yellowed piece of paper fell out. This is a summary of what was written and readable on the paper: =========================================== Civil War Discharge Paper For: Mark CROSBY, Jr. Private, Company B, 16th Regiment Union Army >From Yarmouth, Massachussetts Entered service in 1860 and left service 1864 Marked Paid and signed by B. McCONNELL Description: 5 ft. 3 inches, gray eyes, dark curly hair. He was a clerk in the Union Army. Entered in the Auditors records on July 26, 1870 This document bears the Union Crest. ================================================= Help me post this for others to read. If you know someone who might be interested in this document, please E-Mail a reply to my inquiry. A life is not lost when it is known to future generations.
