My thanks to Betty for pointing out the informative subject website. I have identified a couple of actual, and a number of potential, ancestral relatives who served. Can anyone confirm that the "Flying Camp (McDowell's) VA Militia," was a part of the "5th Reg't (McDowell's) VA Militia? Would a "flying camp" be a quick-reaction cavalry / light artillery type of unit? Frank Nofsinger <frankenoff@snet.com>
To all Looney/Luna researchers. I have some information on a branch of the Looney family of Botetourt/Augusta Co., VA located within my ROWLAND page. It can be found at the following address: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/4945/thomas.html Hope it connects to you all. Ron Hughes

My ancestor died in Botetourt in 1812 according to certain depositions in my posession. I have restricted my search for records of his life and death to present day Botetourt. What was the extent of that county in 1812? I assume that records would now exist in the present day jurisdiction that formed a part of Botetourt in 1812, so that my search could possibly cover several counties and even other states. Barry

Can anyone help me with this line; Thomas Lauderdale also spelled Leatherdale/Louderdale/Liddlerdale was born in Botetourt County, VA. abt. 1753 he was married about 1770 in Botetourt, but I can't find out who is wife was or if they had any children besides my James Lauderdale, born abt. 1773. Also in the Winter of 1783-1784, he migrated to Greene County, TN. Thomas lived on Sinking Springs, near Sinking Springs about five miles due west of Greenville on the way to Warrensburg, but I can't find these land records? Thomas died in Botetourt or Greene Co., does anyone have any information on this line? I understand that these records may be in NC Land Grants Books? Any help would greatly be appreciated thanks, Kathy koates@lightspeed.net
Please contact me if you have any info on a Maud(e) Coleman abt 1820/1830- 1957. She married Ewell Branson Reynolds. Supposedly both were from Botetourt or surrounding county and both lived and died in Wythe Co. Many thanks, Deborah Shelton Wood
Remember that since Botetourt covered such a wide expanse during early days, the area of WV was included. Most Indian captures that took place along the early frontier were probably Shawnee. I have records of severl Carpenter children being captured around 1750s by the Shawnees. One early fairly well-known settler named Abraham Carpenter was captured at age eight and raised until age 18 when he was ransomed. He eventually settled in what is now central WV. Sue
