Anyone that has family that traveled the Great Road between Philadelphia and GA or onto KY and IN might be interested in reading a history of the road. THE GREAT WAGON ROAD, Parke Rouse, Jr. publ. Dietz Press, Richmond VA 23230. I thoroughly enjoyed it. readable and full of insight into our ancestors. Barb
Re above Joseph Carden, I am not related in any way, but a suggestion: if he was living (as an adult?) in Botetort Co in 1791, subtract 20 plus years for possible birth date, and he may have been born in Augusta Co VA as Botetort was taken from Augusta in 1769. Possible a will or other records for a father in Augusta for Joseph? Good luck. Aileen in WA
Eagle Rock is a town between Fincastle and Glen Wilton/Iron Gate just off Rte. 220. The closest cemetery is at Galatia Presbyterian Church, however, there are quite a few family cemeteries as well. I recently owned a parcel of land near Eagle Rock next to the Eagle Rock Elementary School on which the Anderson/Pettygrew cemetery is located. Another nearby cemetery is Locust Bottom Cemetery between Eagle Rock and Glen Wilton. What names are you looking for? Patte Wood Lexington, Virginia

Hi I am looking for the parents of Mary (b. abt. 1794) and Chloe (b. abt. 1785) Rector. Both girls married Arnwine brothers in Grainger Co., TN, in the early 1800s. By 1799, John Rector, Maximillian Rector, and Richard McPherson (all from Botetourt Co., VA) were in Grainger Co. Richard McPherson's son, Barton, was bondsman for Chloe Rector. By 1830, Maximillian Rector and Barton McPherson were living in McMinn Co., TN -- a few households away from Chloe Rector and her husband, John Alexander Arnwine. I would appreciate any Rector or McPherson information as it might lead to new clues. Thanks Yvette Ramsdell Oscoda, MI

I hope someone can help . ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2004 11:06 AM Subject: Brickwall: Parr, Marion George died 1870-1880 Eliza Parr died 5-1891 BURIAL???? The above were my great great grandparents Marion George Parr and Eliza Hill Parr that lived in Botetourt County from 1850, also my great grandfather George W. Parr died in Botetourt and buried in Botetourt???? after 1908 when last child was born and before 1910 because my father, the oldest child brought the other children to Roanoke Va with their mother Nannie (Nancy) Holt Parr. I know in 1880 Eliza and last child George W. Parr lived on a farm District 10 Fincastle Botetourt and on both sides were James Owens and Benjamin Owens so we figured they worked for the Owens family. Any info appreciated. Our "Brickwall" about JOHN JAMES who married LAVINA SMITH, daughter of a JOHN SMITH. Date December 1802 and paper sent Fincastle to register entry by a minister named SAMUEL GRAY. Linda at [email protected] SMITH/JAMES/LAUGHORNE/PETERSON/NICELY/ROGERS/BROWN in BOTETOURT Co 1770-1850
My brick wall is Joseph Carden, who was living in Botetourt County in 1791. One son was Isaac Green(e) Carden, whose son was the same name but who was known as "Green", whose son was my father, Roscoe Carden. I am thus a direct descendent of Joseph, but I have been unable to find where he came from, where/when he was born, when he died, who his parents were, etc. I'd appreciate specific information, suggested avenues to pursue, or referrals to others who might be interested in Carden research. Hi List does some one have a book or access to records of burials in Eagle Rock??? Eagle rock seems to be the name of a town and maybe also a cemetery????????/ Robin
My brick wall is the father/parents of James T. BRIANT/BRYANS/BRYANT, b. 1790, VA. He married Rachel ALDERSON in 1815, Botetourt Co, VA. He died in Wayne County, Illinois in 1850. His children were: William Gleason, James, John, Barzil (named for father Burr Alderson), St. Clair, Augustain, Margaret, Mary, Paralee, Harriet. William Gleason BRYANT was b. 1817, Botetourt Co, VA. Rest of children probably born in Illinois. Connected names were WINFREY, DUNCAN, SHELTON, SLAUGHTER, TURPIN, ADAMSON, DODD, etc. ------------ Lewis BRIANT/BRYANS/BRYANT, was also married in Botetourt Co in 1818, by the same minister as James T. BRIANT, John HELMS. Lewis m. Nancy SHORT. It seems probable that James T. and Lewis were brothers. Thanks, Cousin Mary in OK WILLIAMS, BRYANT/BRIANT, ALDERSON, WINFREY, DODD, TURPIN, ADAMSON. I had to go back and look at the census to see what you meant, as I haven't traced the Davidsons that well (more interested in finding Ezekiel's father). I don't know if Thomas N. is the son of Thomas, and the problem is further complicated just by the census since it has been redone in a sort of alphabetical reference. I'm intrigued now...especially since you have another marriage in 1830. If you want, email me privately and let's see if we can hash this out. Cheers, Linda

Do you have any parents yet for Tunis Brooks, I am stuck on him, too? Also, do you have any siblings for Tunis? The more names the better. I am looking toward the possibility that Tunis's name is a family name, but that is as far as I have researched. Your help is really appreciated. Maybe I can get somewhere now. Thanks so much

Surnames: Oyler, Oiler, Hartman, Brooks, Kelly, Colter, Reynolds Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACI/290.1 Message Board Post: Sarah Hartman, born 1795 and married Tunis Brooks on 1/24/1815 was the daughter of John Hartman, Jr. and Hannah Kelly of Roanoke, VA. Her siblings were George (married Nancy Brodkin), Abraham (married Catherine Hardabarger), Catherine, Michael, Elizabeth, Susanna and Lewis Hartman (who I am descended from). John Hartman, Sr.'s spouse is unknown. Hannah Kelly's parents were John Kelly and Catharine Hartman. Another mind twister: Sally Brooks, Tunis's sister married Lewis Oyler who I am also descended from. All were from Botetourt County, Back Creek, VA. May have been descended from the Germanna Colonies who were a large group of Germans who went specifically to Back Creek to work in the mines in the late 1600's and early 1700's.

Surnames: Davidson, Davison, Baker, Womack, Pitzer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACI/1015 Message Board Post: Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson (who supposedly married a Susan B. Dorman) is said to be from Rockbridge County, VA and is said to be the son of a William Davidson and a Martha Baker. I had originally thought that a William Davidson of Prince Edward County and a Martha Baker of Prince Edward County had my 4th ggf Baker Davidson, who married Elizabeth "Betsey" Womack in Prince Edward County. This Baker Davidson (whoever his parents actually were) and this Elizabeth "Betsey" Womack Davidson had 5 children (per her Prince Edward County will): Mary "Polly," Lavinia, William, "Jr.," Archer and Baker, "Jr." I have seen an Internet site that claims that the William Davidson who was the father of Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson was from Rockbridge County, not Prince Edward County, but most still claim that the mother was Martha Baker from Prince Edward County, VA (whose parents were Douglas(s) Baker and Jane Thompson Baker). If "my" Baker Davidson was not a son of Martha Baker Davidson of Prince Edward County, then I am at a loss as to who his mother was. To complicate things further, "my" Baker Davidson and his father William (apparently) were in Botetourt County, VA, per the 1794 tax rolls there. In 1820, another relative of theirs also appears in Botetourt County (Elizabeth A. "Betsyan/Betsy Ann" Blanton Davidson). Two of Reverend Davidson's supposed sisters, Charlotte and Ginny "Jane," are said to have been married in Botetourt, so that is another "wierd" connection between these two possibly unrelated families. The Reverend's supposed sister Charlotte Davidson is said to have married a John Pitzer in 1994, and a Capt. John Pitzer, Jr. appears on the original tax roll for the newly formed Alleghany County, VA in 1822, along with a Capt. Baker Davidson! This John Pitzer, Jr. had been the sheriff of Botetourt County at the time. Does anyone have any information on the parents of Rev. Andrew Baker Davidson? What about his siblings (a Baker family site lists him as the only child of William Davidson and Martha Baker Davidson, but other sites, as stated above, show him with several siblings). Any/all help to unravel this confusion between Baker Davidsons would be greatly appreciated.
