William Austin II and Rebecca H R Austin, Roanoke, VA Oct 1977 pg 15. Like many of the things I quote from this book I caution that I have found errors so you should use this information as a guide. The books give the parents of John Davis as John and Ellender Davis b. 1815 ( I don't know if this means John or Ellender was born 1815). It also list them as the parents for William Davis who married Sarah Austin, sister to Mary E. Austin. I know this is a real long shot here but the George Davis, son of John and Mary E. Austin Davis wouldn't by chance be George Whitefield Davis who married Maria del Carman Delores Juaranta ATOCHA who was from New Orleans, LA who had ties to the Botetourt Co,. VA AMMEN line? 3. This earlier message copied below of special interest. Henrich Ickes arrived on Queen Elizabeth 16 Sept 1738. 30 yrs. later in the 1790's his son Michael moves from York Co. PA to live near this same group of people. My theory, the two groups knew each other in the old country and probably there is also some family connection. I know that Pepper, Price and Wall were close neighbors of his in VA. Does the name Ekiss, Ickes or various spellings of each turn up in anyone's genealogy or the families of the ship landing 5 Sept.? Are the records of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheraon Church for the 1790-1810 published? Thanks Barb Also, I have a poor copy of a photo of a stone marker in Virginia which reads: "SITE OF ST PETER'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 1750 - 1885." "St Peter's Was The First Church West Of The Alleghenies And The Third Lutheran Church In Virginia. It's Original Members Were Pioneers Who, Having Suffered Religious Persecutions, Had Come From The Palatinate In Germany To Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 5, 1738, Thence To And Around The Horse Shoe Bottoms On New River. This Monument Erected in 19?? Is In Memory Of These Sturdy God-Fearing Pioneers. Richard Haeven (Haeyener), Philip Harless, Adam Harman, Jacob Harman, Valentine Harman, Jacob Harnberger, Israel Laurton, Samuel Pepper, Augustine Price, Henry Price, Jacob Shell, Adam Wall (Wail?)." A committee of four of the above was named, but barely readable.

When I was researching the Robert (P) Stapleton family of PA and VA, who came to America and settled in Oley Township, Berks, Co. PA, among others of his faith. Among the many names affiliated with German/Dutch origins after being born in England, I recall the names Kelchner, Painter/Bender (Bender German for Painter), Harshbarger, along with Stableton, as a few who intermarried. They moved first to Augusta County, VA which eventually changed names to Shenandoah, Botetourt, Montgomery, and other counties. You know the spellings of all those names changed with each iteration, but most attach to one original name. In the case of your JOHN HARDBARGER, his kin could easily have been that of the Harshbarger who married Elizabeth Kelchner, dau. of Henry Kelchner, in 1793, Shenandoah Co. Also, I have a poor copy of a photo of a stone marker in Virginia which reads: "SITE OF ST PETER'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 1750 - 1885." "St Peter's Was The First Church West Of The Alleghenies And The Third Lutheran Church In Virginia. A committee of four of the above was named, but barely readable. Jacob Hornbarger was the wife of Elizabeth Stapleton. I have a bit of info about a Richard P. Harles and Anna M. Preiss (Price). The Phllip Harless on the marker was Johan Philip Harless. The old church was replaced with the present St. Michael's Lutheran Church, probably near Harles' burial place at Longshop, VA, along with Preiss and Agnes Hoffman.

He has two pieces of land listed as Deeded. Perhaps there may be a will out there as landowners are generally able to pass on their goods with having something more than debt1

I am researching my great-greatgrandfather, Henry Isaac Hardbarger, born in 1863. I am chasing down a Henry Hardbarger from Botetourt that may be John and Elizabeth's son. I'm trying to determine if I'm on the right track. My Henry ended up in Alleghany County (not all that far away). Any information you may have would be helpful. Dixie Halber
