William Goheen, b. 1797 in VA, son of John Goheen, married a German woman named Margaret and had three daughters: Elizabeth, Evaline, and Arabelle. Margaret died and William was remarried to Frances Nicely, b. 1806 in VA, around 1832. Their sons were James Wilson and Edward Rufus Goheen; they moved to Indiana around 1833. If anyone can tell me anything they might know about the Goheen and/or Nicely families of Botetourt County in the early 1800s, please contact me. I would very much like to know who Frances's parents were.

The issue is not so much AOL as it probably is the latest email worm attachment that is shutting down portions of the Internet. Mark T. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Try it! http://webhosting.yahoo.com/ps/sb/

Sometime yesterday AOL decided to block (as spammers) all msgs from Rootsweb list5 email lists. As a result we have AOL and CS.COM members on our list who did not receive some very important msgs. To catch up on the msgs you missed, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Since there are hundreds of other email lists on the list5 server, you AOLers have likely missed msgs from other lists you are subscribed to. This is the site where you can check msgs from each of your lists. If anyoune has friends on these lists, who have AOL.. You can help me by transferring this message to your friends, since they are likely not Receiving the list messages. If you happen to be an AOL subscriber, please set your "spam" filter to receive the list messages. I am the GGGG Grandson of Samuel b abt 1811 in Botetourt, d 1879 in Botetourt sp Mary Elizabeth Pursley daughter of Jesse and Winnie. This infomation is confirmed in Family bibles. Samuel was the son of William b abt 1780 and grandson of Andrew from Scotland/Ireland. My tree is Lewis, Calvin, Earl, Samuel, Henry and Samuel. I have several family members searching the history in both Botetourt and Rockbridge counties in VA hoping to find some answers. However, it appears there were several Montgomery families in that area around 1800 and we do not know if they were realted.

I hope we can begin to unravel the Joseph, Hugh, Samuel connection. Thanks. Joseph H.? Montgomery {A} (born ca. 1815 VA, married Apr. 21, 1837 to Charlotte Arter, died July 30, 1881 infirmary Jackson Co. OH) was my g-g-g-grandfather. Pleased to meet you Mrs. Mitchell, we're distant kin. His first son, James Madison Montgomery was my direct relation. I understand your g-grandmother was James' older sister Elizabeth J.? Montgomery (born, ca. 1840 VA, married in dual ceremony* Nov. or Dec. 1859 to Robert Montgomery, died on a date unknown to me). I hope I can address your question properly. I do not know the exact connection with the above mentioned Joseph. Montgomery{A}, Samuel Montgomery{B}*, and Hugh Montgomery{C} of Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties in Virginia. It is my hope that once we determine this, we will know more about their parentage and ancestors. *Following are details regarding dual marriage ceremony of Elizabeth and Robert and details on above mentioned Samuel Montgomery{B} (son of William Montgomery, born between 1810-20, married Christina Pursley Sep. 6, 1832 - married Mary Elizabeth Pursley date unknown - married Lucy A. Baugh 10, Oct. 1849). Children of Samuel Montgomery{B}: Robert (b.ca.1835), Henry (b. ca. 1837), Winney Y (b. ca. 1840), Samuel (b. ca. 1843), Edward S. (b. ca. 1845), Mary (b. ca. 1946), William (b. ca. 1847), Benjamin (b. ca. 1848), Joseph (b. ca. 1850), Martha (b. ca. 1852), John (b. ca. 1944), Baruet? Barney? (b. ca. 1846), Sarah (b. ca. 1859). Above mentioned sons Robert and Samuel may not have moved with Joseph Montgomery {A} and his family to KY then OH in the mid 1850's, but may have followed. In any event they married Joseph Montgomery's {A} daughters Elizabeth (b. ca. 1840) and Minerva R. (b. Feb. 1942) in a dual ceremony on Nov. 24, 1859 in Lawrence Co. OH. Said marriage was performed by GM Adams and recorded in the county newspaper 12-1-59. Of course, the two sons were absent from Botetourt Co. VA for the 1860 census, but the couples began to appear as neighbors in Washington Twsp. of Lawrence Co. OH. Both couples always listed their birthplace as Virginia, or more specifically, Botetourt Co. VA. Robert served in the township militia in 1864 prior to he and Elizabeth's move to Milton Twsp. of Jackson Co. They them moved to Newton Twsp. of Pike Co. (by 1880). The couple farmed there. Elizabeth must have died between 1910-1920 (I'd appreciate an obituary on her), and Robert was still there, in 1920 as the boarder of Homer Graves. Samuel (again, son of Samuel {B}) served briefly in an Ohio Regiment for the last weeks of the war, then he and Minerva raised a family in Lick and Coal Twsp(s), of Jackson Co. OH. Samuel worked as a laborer in a coal tank and coal miner. Minerva appears to have died before 1930 and Samuel before 1920 (again, detailed info appreciated). Returning to the question of the connection between Joseph. Montgomery{A}, Samuel Montgomery{B}, and Hugh Montgomery{C} of Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties in Virginia; the above mentioned settlement, migration, re-settlement and inter-marriage indicates a very close association, if not actual blood relations. I have little information on the family of Hugh Montgomery{C}, so I am very interested in what you have to say, Ms. Hood. My information is sparse and requires further confirmation, but I post it here for your review. If confirmed, this shows the same pattern of settlement, migration, and re-settlement, and suggests a pattern very familiar to this clan. Hugh Montgomery {C}(b. ca. 1813-1826 VA?, married Evaline Downs, date uknown, died Mar. 6, 1881 at Jackson Co, OH). Hugh {C} and Evaline (b. Aug. 1832, married Hugh Montgomery date unknown, died Sep. 24, 1980 Jackson Co. OH) both appear in Glenwood P.O. of Rockbridge Co. VA in 1860, Milton Twsp of Jackson Co. OH in 1880, and Evaline appears widowed with her children in Milton again in 1900. Children of Hugh and Evaline: Daniel (b. ca. 1848), Jackson (b. ca. 1860), Samuel (b. ca. 1865), Susan (b. ca. 1868), Charles (b. ca. 1870), Emma (b. ca. 1872), and Nora S. (b. ca. 1874).

A correction: Samuel Montgomery's daughter was Winnie Yardley Montgomery; she is shown as Yardley Montgomery in the 1870 census of Ritchie Co. WV. Where is the PROOF that Hugh & Samuel were sons of William? There is a Hugh Montgomery Sr. in the census of Ohio Co. WV and a Samuel Montgomery there in 1810. During the Civil war several members of the Montgomery & Pursley families took refuge in WV; perhaps because they had kin there???
