    3. This is probably Gala which was/is just north of Eagle Rock (which is north of Fincastle) on 220. It is no longer a "place name" however and people there get their mail in Eagle Rock. The Buhrman's lived there (still do) and Gala Presbyterian Church is located there. -- Patte Wood [Please reply to [email protected]]

    1. Re: [VABOTETO-L] GALLIE on the JAMES RIVER
    2. Current map shows a Gala in the northwest section of Botetourt Co. -- where Mill Creek and Sinking Creek cross highway 220 and the James River. An 1880s map calls it Gala Waters. That's the closest thing I can see to your Galli. You might check the geography place finders on the internet -- they often give the old name for a current place. 1. [VABOTETO-L] GALLIE on the JAMES RIVER
    2. I am trying to find the precise location "GALLIE on the JAMES RIVER" noted as the location of the marriage of my gggrandparents. I would appreciate any help: John James HOLLAND was born to Thomas R. and Martha S. HOLLAND in Goochland County VA. abt 1862 (from the marriage certificate of John James and Julia P HANNAH HOLLAND). He was married 25Sep1883 at "Gallie on James River", Botetourt County VA. by Rev. Abraham Buhrman to Julia Patterson HANNAH, d/o George B. and Edna J. HANNAH (again from the certificate of marriage). At he time of his marriage, John James HOLLAND's occupation was listed as a miner on the certificate. His age is listed as 21 and his bride as 14, although this is the subject of some ambiguity. On Julia's birth certificate, her date of birth is recorded as 27Sep1870, Botetourt County. This would imply that on the date of her marriage, she was 12, still 2 days away from her 13th birthday. On the birth certificate of their daughter Emmer Viola HOLLAND b 24Nov1889 Clifton Forge, Allegheny County VA, John James Holland is recorded as a worker in the iron ore mines. His wife Julia is recorded as born at Eagle Rock, Botetourt County VA I own a photograph that has John James and Julia HOLLAND with children Emmer, Hattie and another unidentified child, taken in the studio of S. S. Griffith and Co. - circa 1891 - Clifton Forge VA. The "Legend" of John James HOLLAND, as told by his living 96 year old grand daughter Viola Cameron BALLARD THUMM: "Julia Patton HANNAH was let out as a hired girl at a young age (9) as her mother couldn't (or wouldn't) care for her. As she had completed the third grade, he was taken in as a hired girl by a Dr. and his wife somewhere in VA and her schooling was terminated. She spoke of her memories of the young daughter of her master, who was about the same age, getting a doll for Christmas while the only thing Julia received was "chicken s--t and a switch" in her stocking. Her memories of the Dr.'s wife were less than complimentary. She married John James HOLLAND at a young age, 13 by her account, who was considerably older. They had multiple children but the only one that lived to maturity was Emmer Viola HOLLAND. As a railroad employee, John's work took him across the country, as they lived in Clifton Forge VA, OH, MI, MN before returning to Charleston, Kanawha County WV. At about the time of daughter Emmer's marriage to Thomas Cameron BALLARD 25Sep1907(who was living in Deepwater, Fayette County WV), John abandoned his wife and daughter over the choice of her husband. Thomas BALLARD was a railroad employee with a reputation for drinking too much and probably other unnamed and never repeated vices. John left just prior to the wedding on the premise of visiting his sister Edney in Dayton OH and never returned. It is reported by his grand daughter Viola that since contact with the family was not re-established, Julia Patton HANNAH HOLLAND divorced John James seven years (abt 1914) later on the grounds of desertion. Although his ties to the family were broken, various callers came by from time to time, representing themselves as John's relatives - ie: brother, uncle, etc - to check on the family and say hello. One uncle is reported to have the same name - John James HOLLAND. At some point before the divorce, Julia and her daughter Emma visited the home of John's mother (somewhere in VA), a magnificent plantation style manor, but were treated less than graciously, and never returned. At some undocumented time later, the family received a letter from out west (could have been TX) which was allegedly written by a nurse caring for an ailing John James HOLLAND. It stated that he had been severely wounded in the line of duty (railroad detective) and that if he recovered, his plans included a return trip to WV to visit his abandoned family. This was the last any of the family ever heard or saw of Mr. HOLLAND." This Botetourt families of HOLLAND and HANNAH have been a brick wall for some time; I would appreciate anything anyone could contribute on the marriage location "GALLIE on JAMES RIVER", the HOLLANDS, the HANNAHS - or any suggestions. Tom THUMM

    3. The Nicely and Circle families lived in the Ritch Patch area of Botetourt (currently Glen Wilton) which borders Alleghany and Botetourt Counties. I have a map showing the land of the Circles next to the Wood family of Botetourt. Members of this Wood family were also in Bath County and are also connected to Reynolds who were in Rockbridge and Amherst. There are Wood/Reynolds relatives that married Armentrouts. Members of the same Nicely family also settled in Rockbridge County. I don't know if this could possibly be the same family, but there was a Michael McElwee family in the area. Donna Pultz has done a lot of research on the Nicely family. -- Patte Wood [Please reply to [email protected]] ----------

It is likely the trail of John will show his son William and the family in the same tax lists as the Nicely family of Frances in the 1785-1800 taxes and census for PA and Virginia. 3. This is the latest communication from Rootsweb. dns: 2004-01-27 Today, RootsWeb has undergone significant modifications to its domain name lookup and IP addresses, and from our perspective this looks to have happened without incident. However, there may be consequences external to RootsWeb's network. IP addresses are the underlying methodology that computers use to identify and talk to each other on the internet. While most ISPs will only store (cache) RootsWeb's IP addresses for short periods, some ISPs may retain our old details for an extended period. If you are having difficulties reaching RootsWeb sites (however, you probably won't see this page), the first recommendation is to wait an hour or two and then try again. If the period has extended to about a day, you may wish to ask your ISP to flush their DNS cache and see if that helps. If your ISP needs to contact us, they are welcome to contact us via the <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi>HelpDesk web form. With regard to e-mail, it is also possible that e-mail to and from RootsWeb may be delayed until the changes have spread (propagated) through the internet. Also, where RootsWeb has had some of our mailing list servers placed on a <http://searchcio.techtarget.com/gDefinition/0,294236,sid19_gci896131,00.htm l>whitelist with ISPs, these arrangements may need to be renewed, with the consequence being that we may not be able to deliver e-mail to all ISPs at this time. As a reminder, RootsWeb's mailing lists do NOT and CANNOT transmit infected e-mail as we forward text e-mail only and no binary attachments, though it is possible for the email addresses of mailing lists to be faked.
