All states have title companies it's just a matter of when they where established and how long records counties have been records. I know some individuals who still have the original land grants which their ancestors where given. Numerous county courthouses where destroyed by fire for numerous reasons. I live in TN and know of one court house was burned by the county clerk to hide the fact he stole tax monies. Because of the Civil War numerous courthouses where burnt as soldiers invaded communities. Many occurrences in the Civil War were not the result of the Generals in charge, but so called self righteous men. In Michigan they are referred to as an abstract company. One large company was "Burton Abstract". The owner and founder was very interested in genealogy and had a massive personal library which was donated to the Detroit Library (main branch) upon his death. Hope this helps. Patti

Family tradition says he came to America in 1750, laid out the town of Fincastle, VA and was one of its first trustees however no record on early history of Fincastle has ever been found so we doubt that it is correct. On 21 Feb 1797, Daniel Kessler (Susannah's brother) was appointed guardian of her two sons, Jacob Clare and Daniel Clare and her two step sons George Clare Jr and Allen Clare (from minutes of Botetourt County Court 1769-1800.) Eight years after the death of George Clear/Clare Susannah Kessler Clare married 21 Apr 1798 Botetourt Co., VA Jacob Howry. There were no issue from this marriage. The records for "Greenfield" are in our Botetourt County Courthouse. Records are intact to 1770 when the county was formed. The land records are in the deed books, located in the vault to the left near the copier. Also survey records may be of some help. those records are to the right along the wall near the antique desk. Several books in the county also have information about "Greenfield".

Abraham Buhrman to John James HOLLAND b abt1862 Goochland County (from certificate of marriage). This made my gggrandmother married on the day BEFORE her 13th birthday! 2) At the time of this marriage, the husband John James HOLLAND's occupation was listed as a miner on the certificate; s/o Thomas R. and Martha S. HOLLAND age 21 b Goochland County VA (b abt 1862). 3) According to the 4Jul1866 marriage certificate of Julia's parents on file in Botetourt County, her father George B. HANNAH (s/o Wm. and Mildred HANNAH) -- age 25 (b abt 1841 Charlotte County) occupation is listed as carpenter and he is noted as widowed at the time of his marriage to Edney J. Greenfield was the home of William Preston though I'm not sure how much the boundaries of the original Preston land overlaps with the current Greenfield Education Center/Industrial Park. The Prestons were a prominent family in Botetourt/Montgomery and there is quite alot on the web about them. My ggggrandparents, Thomas and Nancy Sesler, owned land adjoining Greenfield and the Great Road as did Edward McDonald and the Gish family (after 1790 and until at least 1823). Phyllis Yoshida
Thanks to all who responded to my recent query about the history of the land on which the new Greenfield Education Center has been built in Botetourt Co on Rt. 220. I hope you'll post your responses to this question on the list. I wonder if Botetourt County has what we here in California call a "title company". These companies usually have a complete list of the title of ownership of a piece of land in the county, from original landowner down to current landowner. You could follow up through deeds at the court house, too. Good luck with your research. I was wondering if anyone has information about the land in Botetourt Co, which the new Greenfield Educational Center is located on. I specifically want to know what families lived on that land. There is an old house (log bottom with an upstairs addition added later) and another building nearby that is located on a hill, down the paved road from the Education Center. Does anyone know what family(ies) lived there? Or does anyone know of a place to obtain this information? Thanks for your help! Lynn
