July 18, 1771 in Bedford county, Virginia. He married a Elizabeth Trent on March 29, 1796 in Bedford County, Virginia. They had nine children. Their oldest was my ggggrandfather, Elijah Baker b. July 11, 1798 in Augusta county, VA. I found both Samuel and Elijah in the 1810 census on Pg. 610; Botetourt county, Virginia US Census. I am trying to trace them to 1800 and 1790. Any help would be appreciated. There is an oral family tradition the "family" came from Ireland. I am not sure if this is true. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much. Janette

    3. Well folks....I've FINALLY gotten a great start on the Southwest Times Newspaper Historic Archives for Southwest Virginia. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapulask/swtimes/ This page represents years of work and will be an ongoing project so be sure and check back often. The most extensive datbase to date is the obituary collection. In case you would like to share the link with others be sure and mention that it covers more than just Pulaski County. The Southwest Times in the early years covered news from most of Southwest Virginia. Have fun and good luck in your searches! Tami Ramsey I am sending this instead of Forward. I hope it will shed some light on a dead end. This was a lot of work. Heads up to Tami. When those areas became states the records were sometimes put in the county in which they were relevant to under new county names and new state names. You need to look at an old map then look at a current one and decide what county comes closest to the area your looking for. Also to save time you can check state records. Virginia was parent to KY, OH, Tn. I've even found some records listed under different town names than what they are now. It is hard work but well worth it when you can locate the people your looking for. Good luck, Phyllis

Classification: Census Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBC.2ACI/1076.1 Message Board Post: I ran into this problem when I first started; I finally made a conclusion [may or maynot be right] that for the Blueridge areas and north/west of there you need to search PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, AND KENTUCKY in the 1800 and sometimes the 1790. Some areas were classified by the "??" as being counties and not in the "state" as we view it today. Kentucky was a Virginia County before it was a state. Confusing! Try to find some maps on the Land Grants by the Ohio Company, the Penn Grant and such and perhaps you might get a better view of the areas around your search. It helped me quite a bit. Elizabeth's mother was an Allen (and Baker's father was William Womack, who later moved to Botetourt County, VA on land Baker Davidson had obtained). I think Elizabeth's mother was known as "Mollie" Allen. Baker was born about 1775, and he was apparently born in Augusta County, VA (in a part that became Rockbridge County, VA when that county was created in 1778), but he was later reared in Botetourt County, VA. Baker Davidson's brothers, also reared in Botetourt County, VA, included Thomas Davidson. It appears that Thomas Davidson named one of his sons Allen Davidson, so I wonder if Thomas Davidson may have married into the same Allen family as Baker's mother-in-law? I see that a Hugh Allen Senior and Junior were in Botetourt, and one of them appears on a list of the first citizens of Allegheny County, VA when that county was created in 1822 as Captain Hugh Allen. A son of Baker Davidson, namely Baker W. Davidson, appears on that same list, as does a Captain Samuel McClure and Capt. John Pitzer, Junior. Note: A McClure man married a daughter of the above-referenced Thomas Davidson. Thomas Davidson had another son named Thomas M. Davidson, and I think I saw a record about a Thomas M. Allen, but I don't know if there is any connection (and I don't know what the "M" stood for). Any idea if a "Botetourt Allen" married a Davidson? Any idea is "Mollie" Allen, who married William Womack in PECo, was from this same "Botetourt Allen family."
