I haven't read all these emails, but, only part of what is now WV was Botetourt Co at one time. Greenbrier County was formed and then from Greenbrier came Kanawha, Monroe, Nicholas, Webster, Mason, Cabell, Jackson, Wayne, Boone, Putnam, and Roane Counties. WV has 55 couties. Sorry, if this was already stated. Lyle Corder

May I ask who your GRAHAMS were and where they were? I know nothing about my earliest known GRAHAM ancestor accept his name was James Newton and he married Sarah FORTENBERRY, who was born about 1804 in S.C. They had 6 children in Ky., and then they moved on to Jackson Co., Al. by 1840. Thanks, Velma
Thanks for posting that timeline of the formation of the Virginia/WV/KY counties. My gosh, no wonder we long-time West Virginians whose families were the pioneers, who came from Virginia, have the devil of a time trying to figure out where our ancestors lived! I'm sure many novices have thought their ancestors moved around constantly, when, in truth, they may have sat in the same spot for a 100 years and had the counties names shift around them! Part of West Va, all of Kentucky, part of Illinois and Indiana were one time Botetourt County. There is a map at the website that will show all the property that Botetourt County County covered. Botetourt County was formed in 1770 from Augusta County. Fincastle has always been the county seat of Botetourt county. The Botetourt Co, VAGenWeb site is located at URL http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaboteto/botetot.htm
Do you have dates for when Botetort changed? That would help a lot to keep questions off the list that didn't make sense. Ginny in WY (once I think it was part of KS and then CO Territory)

Hello Listmembers I am trying to locate the parents and siblings of William M GRANT. He married Ann Caroline "Nancy" GARRETT (born about 1790 ), daughter of William GARRETT / Ann TAYLOR , from Amherst Co VA .In 1808 in Amherst Co VA or Davidson Co TN ( I have found both versions ) he witnessed the approval of marriage of William GARRETT's daughter , Sarah GARRETT , to William BIBB of Amherst Co. He applied for property in Davidson Co TN and Huntsville MT in 1814 and he died in Huntsville, Madison Co AL in 1827. Children listed in the will are: Alexander G. , Harriett S ( married Mathew A SMILEY ) , Sarah R (married Henry BIBB ), Eliza ( Elizabeth C ) married Alfred CAGE, Egbert, Patsy A.W., Emily G., John S Washington, Nancy. After William's death, his wife , Nancy, married Levi CUMMINGS of Limestone Co AL. Does anyone descend from or know of this GRANT family ? I think that William may have married at least once before he married Nancy GARRETT as she seems to be young to have borne his older children. Please help if you can. Thanks. Molly
