Vince: There was a William H. Crawford (a Clergyman) who was born 1822 in TN and died 1891 in California. He had three marriages, one to a Nancy. He had NO children named Paulina or Pauline or anything close to that name. To my knowledge he never lived in Craig county though he did have kin in Botetourt County. He did visit the family in Botetourt County probably in the 1860's or 1870's and may have resided in Craig county for a short time. It's "Late Night in the Virginia Room", an evening of virtual grave digging, ghost hunting and soul searching. Family historians know what we're talking about; it's called genealogy research. On Friday, October 26, at the Main Library, from 6:00pm-11:00pm, the Roanoke Public Libraries is hosting this special event for "Night Owl" researchers. Enjoy a night of research in the Virginia Room with complimentary pizza and refreshments. "Dead on the Web", a computer lab class exploring death and cemetery records on the Internet, will also be offered that evening. "Late Night" and "Dead on the Web" will be held at the Main Library, 706 S. Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA. Both are free and open to the public. Registration is required, as the library will not be open to the general public after regular hours. Call 540-853-2073 or email varoom@roanokeva.gov for more information and to register.
Folks, I am cross-posting to Craig and to Botetourt. I have been pulling my hair out over this one - I have been trying endless leads that all have fizzled out. Here is the latest that presents hope, however! George W. RUBLE m. Paulina J. CRAWFORD in 1869 at the home of A. PRICE. The marriage was performed by a clergyman - Presbyterian - Wm H CRAWFORD. Now this surely is too coincidental to be coincidental, don't you think? An Uncle? The Father? A Cousin? Wm. H. CRAWFORD is found in the 1870 Craig County Census with wife Nancy, and 4 kids. Their age and children's ages would allow for Paulina to be a daughter! Wm was 48 and Nancy 46 in 1870. Paulina was born 1844. In 1870, she would have been a mere 26. Plus or minus. Can you tell me if you know the whereabouts of this Wm H CRAWFORD for 1860? He and his family were born in Tennessee. Were they in Botetourt/Craig, etc., in 1860? Were they in Tennessee or somewhere else in 1860? Also: A. PRICE could well be a good friend of GW RUBLE, but it is possible he had ties to Paulina, instead. Vince the Desperate
Really good! Grief. Not Good Grief, right? Sorry. Grief - I see Griff listed, now that you mention it, but with no basis. Could tie in with the name Griffen? I will try to hone in here. Couldn't do it without the data you have provided. I do wish the date of birth seemed more reasonable. LDS Online lists a really early birth date for Paulina. They call her Polly and make her more than a decade younger. But then that sounds more reasonable than to say she was born in 1844, when George was born circa 1813! Paulina J. CRAWFORD, and at least one other, named Fannie M. CRAWFORD are buried there. Paulina was buried under her assumed name, RUBLE. I would like to ask this list some questions, hopefully to receive one or more answers: 1. Was Paulina's *maiden name* CRAWFORD, or was that name from a first marriage? Since the preponderence of that cemetery consisted of TUCKERs, CRUSHs, etc., could one of those have been an actual maiden name, in place of CRAWFORD? 2. Do you know Paulina's parents? 3. Are there other CRAWFORD researchers on board for this list at the moment? If not, does anyone know of any CRAWFORD researchers for Botetourt? 4. Was nearby Fannie M. CRAWFORD a close relation? I now think that (due to the 1880 census) John Thomas CRAWFORD, son of Paulina J., was, in fact, John THOMAS. If so, that would have made Paulina, Paulina J. THOMAS. Unfortunately, she had become RUBLE in 1869. Since John was born 1865, it may well be Paulina was a THOMAS only during non-census years. Sounds like the Civil War? Their children were Hetty, Thomas, Mary, Martin, and Rachel. I have more information on Rosanna, Samuel, and the children. Robert Caldwell married Mary(I don't have a surname for her.). Steve, here are the Crawford family I spoke to you about on Saturday at New Castle. Would you know who the parents are for James Matison/Madison Crawford? And would love to know more about the Stebers. I have never been to Montgomery County where James and Catherine were born and perhaps that is where I should start. But in the meantime, any way you can help me, I sure would appreciate it. Seems to be a lot of interest in the Crawford's right now. I am sending this e-mail to you and the Botetourt list. Maybe we can all find some of what we need to knock down our brick wall. It was good seeing you again. I missed seeing Rena. Wish she could have been there also. Take care of that shoulder. Well, I am back to square one in a way, but with additional data. Apparently, Paulina J. CRAWFORD, with her first name often misrepresented, had an illegitimate son, John Thomas CRAWFORD. Later, he is referred to as John THOMAS, then John T. RUBLE. He marries - guess what - a CRAWFORD! [Mary] Emma CRAWFORD. He has a number of children, one of whom, at least, is buried at Oriskany, named Cleo Mary RUBLE - dying at the age of 8 and a half. Sad. If anyone connects to these ones, or has any insight on them, please contact me. Vince Summers P.S. Emma CRAWFORD is the daughter of Edward G. CRAWFORD and Emma E. ?
Folks... Anyone know of a THOMAS married to a Paulina, and who died in the Civil War? Thanks, Vince Summers
I do list some CRAWFORDs, but not, perhaps, connected to my Paulina. I begin to suspect she was a CRAWFORD by a first marriage. She is listed with a son, named John Thomas CRAWFORD. Either the child was born illegitimately, or was from a first marriage. The others you mention are not familiar to me. Yet, I think it likely that one of yours was a husband to mine. Folks, I visited the Oriskany Cemetery (is there a special name for that cemetery) near the Oriskany Post Office yesterday. Thanks! Vince
