Hi Sheila, Sorry for the confusion. The period covered is World War II. "The Bedford Boys" to which the book refers was a National Guard unit formed in Bedford, VA at the beginning of World War II. Eventually, the unit was called up, and sent overseas to England to train for the invasion on D-Day. They became part of Company A, First Battalion, and were the first to hit Omaha Beach on D-Day. The loss of life was tremendous. Of the 35 Bedford men that were part of the landing force, 19 were killed in the first 15 minutes of battle. It was the largest per capita loss for any town in the entire war. You can read more about it here: http://www.pbs.org/memorialdayconcert/wwii/bedford.html Jean Spradlin-Miller > > From: "Sheila Murnahan" <[email protected]> > Date: 2006/10/05 Thu PM 07:31:34 EDT > To: <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [VABEDFOR] The Bedford Boys By Alex Kershaw > > Ok this posting was made followed by several others including a couple showing names of people but what war are you talking about here?? Since one of the emails mentioned "landing at D-Day", I am assuming you are talking WWII. Is this the only war covered? > Sheila in FL
As a tribute to these brave soldiers, why doesn't someone in Bedford post names of all at least the 19 who died. As a 6 year in Paris Texas, I remember WWII neighbor men killed or wounded. There was large Camp Maxey near that trained 300,000 men. We could hear and feel artillery practice day and night. One can only imagine what these men on D-Day felt. Paris Texas was small town, all these men had to be quartered off base. A man from NYC lived a few months with my folks, he took me to Toy Store and all toys I could carry he bought. He was killed 6 days after D-Day. Never knew or remembered his name, toys and learning he was killed is all I can recall. So thanks to my "Yankee Hero" where ever you are!!!!! Thanks to all who have protected our USA. gerald preas dallas tx > Hi Sheila, > > Sorry for the confusion. The period covered is > World War II.
