Folklore are beliefs, customs, and traditions that people pass on from generation to generation. Folklore consists of stories, such as ballads, fairy tales, folk tales, legends, and myths. It also includes arts and crafts, dances, games, nursery rhymes, proverbs, riddles, songs, superstitions, and holiday and religious celebrations. Folklore is not always written down, but rather passed orally from person to person. Examples include games such as jump rope and marbles. However, folklore often contains a shred of truth that can help you in your family tree searching. Among the folklore of Patrick County is The Legend of Lover's Leap, The Legend of the Fairystone, and The Legend of Ahart Ridge. Their were also ballads that were recorded from Meadows of Dan by the Blue Ridge Institute in Ferrum. Come and discover our rich Patrick County Folklore and share your stories with us this night, and discover ways it can help you research your ancestry.
