    1. Cherokee Program to be presented at the 8/15 Patrick County Genealogy Society Meeting

    3. The Patrick County Genealogy Society will have a program on the General History & Culture of the Cherokee, and Genealogy on Tuesday, August 15th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Stuart Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Stuart. The Church is located on Blue Ridge Street across from the historic Patrick County Courthouse. Dr. R. Michael Abrams is the Director of the Cherokee Heritage Museum and Gallery in Cherokee, NC and he will be speaking on the General History & Culture of the Cherokee, and Genealogy. The Cherokee owned all the land on top of the Blue Ridge including Vesta, Meadows of Dan, and Tuggles Gap. The Cherokee were also at Fairystone Park. Many people in both Patrick and Floyd Counties are descended from the Cherokee. This is an opportunity to learn how to research your Cherokee ancestry and learn about their way of life. This program is especially suitable for children, so you're welcome to bring your families to this program. PCGS will also be hosting the Rocky Knob Advisory Committee at this meeting as the Native Americans is in the top four choices for the Cultural/Heritage Center at Rocky Knob. The Native Americans were at Rocky Knob before our settlers--if you want more information, see the Patrick County Heritage Book Volume II as their are several stories on the Native American History of Patrick County as well as a Pioneer Story that talks about a Native American at Rock Castle Gorge. Dr. Abrams has a 30 year collection of Cherokee History & Culture that he is looking to place possibly at Rocky Knob. As a matter of fact, Doug Belcher had just talked with him in person over the 4th of July Holiday and he is very interested in this collection coming to Rocky Knob. He envisions a library with research center, museum, classrooms, audtiorium, etc. This collection is one of a kind, and would tell the stories of the Native Peoples of both Patrick and Floyd Counties and would sure to be a tourism beacon for both counties. Dr. Abrams does programs on Baskets, Pottery, Cherokee Beliefs & Dreams, Old Religion, Astronomy, Masks and Musical Instruments, Games, the Cherokee Little People (sound familiar as in the Legend of the Fairystone), Genealogy, Trail of Tears, Tobacco & Pipes, The Eagle and The Bear, Cherokee Medicine, and much much more. This makes the 10th Native American program that the Patrick County Genealogy Society has hosted since our inception in 1999 and we very much look forward to having each and everyone of you with us this night. We welcome each of you and again the program begins at 6:00 p.m. and will last for 2 hours. The first part of the program will be on the General History (Clothing, Food, Clans, Trail of Tears, Baskets, Pottery, etc.) & Culture of the Cherokee. The 2nd hour will be on the Genealogy. There will be a break in between both sessions. We did this so that our school children can attend the program and still get home in time to do their homework. We look forward to seeing you on August 15th. Alpha Hiatt, Vice President Patrick County Genealogy Society __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
