I am told that there was a William Lee in Bedford County about 1800. My great great grandfather was a William Lee, father of Mary Ann Lee. Mary Ann Lee and Abraham Carlock are my great greatparents. Both Wiliam Lee and Mary Ann were born in Virginia and moved to Claiborne County,TN where Mary Ann evidently met Abraham Carlock. She became his second wife in about 1803. His first wife had died and he had many children. Mary Ann and Abraham also had many children. They moved to Overton County, TN and then on to Madison County,Illinois and on.. .., William Lee was with them in Illinois. I have much more information about the CARLOCKs, etc.. Of course, my question is: Can anyone head me in the right direction to find that William Lee who was in Bedford County? I am also a descendant of Margaret Read, daughter of Samuel Read///Reed,, who made his will in the 1790s in Bedford County. So far I haven't found Samuel's parents. I am 94 and will probably be getting a little short of time. So I would be doubly appreciative of an early response. Ancient Alice (Alice Goodson Woodby)
Alice: The Bedford Co. VA Will of William Read was dated March 23, 1797, and reads: Wife Johanna; sons SAMUEL, John, Wyatt, Edmund, Jones (sic.. James?) Daughters Johanna, Elizabeth Miller, Mary Anderson, Nancy Rucker, Sally Rucker, Joycey Rucker Executors: Wife Johanna, sons SAMUEL and JAMES Witnesses: Faris Layne, Rebecca Layne, Nancy Farys Recorded Sept. 24, 1797. Teste James Steptoe [Bedford Co. Virginia Will Book 2, p. 233, transcribed by Ann Chilton, 1988] Alice: note that "recorded" meant date will was proven in court ... also known as 'probate date'. "Teste James Steptoe" meant James Steptoe, then Clerk of Bedford Court did the recording and testified it was true as far as he knew. Hope this helps.
