I think you're right. Add to that the comparatively primitive communications system and conditions they were operating under, and I wonder that we have as much as we do. When you add to this that these were volunteers whose periods of service were often dictated by the very real necessity of getting in the harvest or having their families face starvation, and you have people who served over two or more periods of time, depending on where they were and what was going on. If there was nothing happening in their local area, and they were in the militia, they went home.
