I'd like to join the discussion on this one interesting topic. My current opinion is different lists of men who served in the Revolution were created at different times by different people for different reasons. I don't know for sure, but I don't think there is any one complete list of officers and enlisted men from Bedford which covers the entire period. A few years ago I came across a book title listed as "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War" by J. T. McAllister, published 1913. Not having any luck finding a copy I eventually received a new volume via Library Loan. Heritage Books, Inc. had republished and re-copyrighted in 1989; (337 pages incl. index) The author (McAllister) stated his sources of information were mainly from the counties where documents were recorded. These lists give the date of nomination or the commission, and wherever possible, the captains under whom the lieutenants and ensigns served. McAllister also said It was evident that the record was not always complete, and that in some instances an officer was undoubtedly sworn in, although the date of recommendation can be found on the Order Book. For Bedford County McAllister listed the names of 141 men with dates from 1778 through 1781. These are the designated rankings: County Lieutenant, Lieutenant (when there was nothing to show whether first or second), Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, Ensign. Some of the names don't appear on other lists I've seen. Respecting the copyright, I can only tell you how many names appear by the first letter of the surnames. I'll be glad to look up 1 or 2 names at a time by private e-mail. A Happy and Memorable July 4th to all ! Hi, Bill~ Hope you're doing well and enjoying the summer. It's been a long time since we've corresponded. Your kind offer piqued my interest. I'd be very interested in these surnames if you have time. I figure that not all will be represented, so I hope you don't mind me asking for this many. CROCKETT MARTIN KENT KASEY/CASEY KENNEDY/CANNADAY or variations SHAON SWAIN Thank you so much!
