Sherrie Where can I find this book you mentioned? Early Families Along James River, Vol 2, Charles City & Prince George Cos Gerald Preas Dallas Tx
I just noticed in the "Tuckers in Bedford" email stream, references of the Woodson and Tucker connection. I did some genealogy research for a relative and he is a Woodson, related to the John Woodson that came to Jamestown with Gov. Yardley. Below is a snip-it of information from that genealogy book. If you would like more info I would be glad to provide it. Charlotte ************************* 1. JOHN WOODSON, JR.-1 [1, 2, 3, 4]. His birth Abt. 1632 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Fleur de Hundred also known as Flowerdew on the outskirts of Jamestown Fort, south side of the James River about 30 miles above Jamestown.) [5, 6]. John's death Oct 1684 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown). Burial Oct 1684 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Fleur de Hundred) [7]. John was also Known As was "Tub" Woodson. Occupation in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Planter in Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)) [8]. It was in Fleur de Hundred that the family lived at the time of the massacre by the Indians on April 19, 1644 when John and his younger brother, Robert were saved by the courage of their mother. The father, John Sr. died in the Indian raid. John and his brother, Robert were in the 1679 tithables (census) at Curles, Henrico Co., Virginia with a plantation on the north side of James River, which was a short distance above Fleur de Hundred. John and his descendants bore the nickname of "Tub Woodsons" and his brother, Robert and his descendants bore the nickname of "Potato Hole Woodsons". JOHN WOODSON, JR. married SARAH TUCKER [7, 9, 10]. Her birth Abt. 1635 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)). Her death Bet. 1657-1659 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)). Their marriage 1654 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)) [11]. They had 2 children: JOHN WOODSON III and ROBERT WOODSON. Relationship Notes: John Jr.'s will was dated Aug 20, 1684 and proved Oct 1, 1684. In the will, John identified Sarah by using the term "wife,A" however, in subsequent legal documents, Sarah was defined as "relict of John Woodson, decd.A" The will does list John's sons, John and Robert; John's grandchildren (Robert's children): Jane and Samuel; John's brother, Robert and Robert's 4 youngest sons (Robert, Richard, Joseph, and Benjamin), and his "Couzin" [sic] John Woodson. (In the 17th century, the term "cousin" meant nephew. The rational for naming Robert's eldest son separate from Robert's other children could be because John was married with a family while the other children were still considered minors.) JOHN WOODSON, JR. & SARAH TUCKER's children: i. JOHN WOODSON, III [11, 2, 4]. His birth Abt. 1655 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)) [2]. He married Mary Tucker. They were married Abt. 1677 in James, Virginia, USA [2]. He died Aft. 01 May 1700 in James, Virginia, USA [12]. Residence in Henrico, Virginia, USA. ii. ROBERT WOODSON [11]. He was born Abt. 1657 in James, Virginia, USA. In 1684, Robert's father died. Robert and his children, Jane and Samuel, were listed in his father's will dated Aug 20, 1684. Based on the information in the will, Robert was married before 1684. Robert received a servant boy and an Indian girl, 60 acres joining "Couzin" John Woodson's property and another 100 acres on the north side of Bailey's Brook. All the land could not be sold and was to remain in the family. JOHN WOODSON, JR.'s 2nd marriage was to SARAH BROWNE [7, 9]. Her birth Abt. 1632 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)). Her death Abt. 1692 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)). JOHN WOODSON, JR. & SARAH BROWNE. Their marriage Abt. 1660 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)). JOHN WOODSON JR. and SARAH BROWNE had no children. Generation 2 2. JOHN WOODSON, III-2 (John Woodson, Jr.-1) [11, 2, 4]. His birth Abt. 1655 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)) [2]. He died Aft. 01 May 1700 in James, Virginia, USA [12]. Residence in Henrico, Virginia, USA. General Notes: In 1684, John Jr.'s father died. John Jr. was the executor of his father's will dated Aug 20, 1684 and he received all remaining property that was not identified. JOHN WOODSON, III married MARY TUCKER (daughter of Samuel Tucker & Jane Larcome [11, 2, 4]). Her birth Bet. 1660-1670 in Jamestown, James, Virginia, USA (Curles near Jamestown (now Henrico County)) [2]. She died Abt. 1710 in James, Virginia, USA [2]. General Notes: Mary's father, Samuel was the Captain ("Master") of the Ships "Vine Tree" and "Seaflower". Upon Samuel's death, Jane (Mary's mother) married John Pleasants of Curls, Henrico Co., Virginia. Jane (Larcome Tucker) Pleasants' will was located in the Henrico County Records 1706-1709, p. 166 and recorded June 1709, where she listed her daughter, Mary Woodson and grandsons, Joseph, Benjamin and Tucker Woodson. JOHN WOODSON, III & MARY TUCKER were married Abt. 1677 in James, Virginia, USA [2]. Relationship Notes: In the legal records, John was listed as marrying the orphan Samuel Tucker and in John Pleasant's will the reference is made to "...son of wife's daughter Mary Woodson..". Therefore, it is fairly certain that John Woodson married Mary Tucker, the daughter of Samuel and Jane (Larcome) Tucker. John and Mary (Tucker) Woodson III had 4 known children, Joseph, Tucker, Benjamin and Mary Jane. John Woodson Jr.'s father did not list any of John III's children in the will, therefore, it is fairly certain that John and Mary did not have any children by 1684. 1) Their eldest son, Joseph was mentioned in the will dated 1690 of John Pleasants I (The Immigrant). John Pleasants I indicated that if his eldest son, John Pleasants II did not have any heirs, then the estate would go to the next child, Joseph. If Joseph did not have any heirs, it would go to his daughter, Elizabeth. If she did not have any heirs, then the estate would go to his brothers' heirs. If none of his sons or brothers had heirs, the estate would go to his grandson, Joseph (son of John and Mary (Tucker) Woodson). Of course, this was highly unlikely and the estate remained in the Pleasants family for several generations. Joseph was married 3 times. His first marriage was to Mary Sanburne and they had 1 son, Sanburne Woodson. After Mary's death, Joseph married Elizabeth Scott and they had 1 daughter that married William Pierce (who died and left 4 orphans). Joseph's father, John Woodson became their guardian. After Elizabeth died, Joseph married Elizabeth Murry (before 1724). Elizabeth Murry was the daughter of John Murry of Isle of Wright Co., Virginia. Joseph and Elizabeth (Murry) Woodson had 5 children. The land on Four Mile Creek in Henrico Co., Virginia that Joseph inherited from his father, was passed down from generation to generation. Joseph and Elizabeth (Murry)'s grandson, John sold his share and moved to Cumberland Co., Virginia and was known as John Woodson of Carters Ferry. 2) Their daughter, Mary Jane (aka "Jane" born about 1686) married her 1st cousin, Joseph Woodson, son of Colonel Robert ["potato hole"] and Elizabeth (Ferris) Woodson. They were married 27 Jan 1700/01. John's Woodson Jr.s will was dated May 1, 1700 and Mary (Tucker) Woodson's will was dated 1710. Children named in both wills were their eldest son Joseph, their sons Samuel Tucker and Benjamin and their daughter, Jane (as defined in the Tidewater Virginia Families by Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis, pp. 40). This is very good information. Did you find anyone named Baughan/Baughn or Vaughan/Vaughn with this family of Tucker's? In Cumberland Co. there was a Tucker Baughan or Vaughan. There is a good possibility his mother was a Tucker. ----- Original Message ----- From: Charlotte Brown To: vabedfor@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 10:11 AM Subject: Re: [VABEDFOR] A little more Tucker and Woodson I just noticed in the "Tuckers in Bedford" email stream, references of the Woodson and Tucker connection. [5, 6]. 40).
