John Thomson, a founder of numerous Presbyterian churches in the Central Virginia region prior to 1750, was one of the leading ideologues supporting the "Old Side" doctrine. His son-in-law Rev. Richard Sankey brought many of his Hanover Congregation to the area in 1758? to escape the depredations of the Indians in the early years of the French and Indian War. There are many who believe their ancestors were originally members of the Thomson/Sankey churches in Pennsylvania, and migrated to Virginia with them - implying that they, too, were "Old Siders." There is a list of those who accompanied Sankey, but not for those who had earlier followed Thomson.
