The Natl Park Service web site treats Companies E & I of the 28th VA Infantry together. Neither company has been mentioned in the recent discussion of Bedford Civil War companies. The site states that "the 28^th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Lynchburg VA, June 1861. Its members were raised in the counties of Botetourt, Craig, Bedford, Campbell and Roanoke." "This certifies that on p286 of vol. 3 of the manuscript Confederate records of the Archives Division of the Virginia State library the information is given that James G. Board was a captain in Co. E, 28^th Virginia Infantry Regiment, known as Botetourt Springs Rifles, Roanoke Co, commanded by Captains H. G. Rocke and James G. Board; [JGB] resigned January 26, 1864. General Order 51. / R. W. Church/, M. H. P., State Librarian" Perhaps Company E was composed mostly of Botetourt Co men given that it was known as the Botetourt Springs Rifles. I would be interested in hearing from anyone connected with James G. Board mentioned.above and am happy to share info. I have been told by a J.G.Board descendant that he was a Drummer Boy in the Civil War but so far it is hearsay. I have read that the bugle was in use by the time of the American Civil War and had pretty much replaced the drum as the signaling device in Cavalry units but this might not be true of the infantry. Would appreciate more info on this, too. Many thanks, Judith B. Gabor
The 28th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in Lynchburg, VA in June, 1861, Its members were raised in Botetourt, Craig, Bedford, Campbell, and Roanoke counties. After fighting at First Manassas, the unit was assigned to Gen. Pickett's, Garnett's, and Hunton's Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia. The regiment was active in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it served with Longstreet at Suffolk. The 28th moved to North Carolina, then was on detached duty at Richmond. It fought at Cold Harbor, the Petersburg trenches, and was engaged in various conflicts around Appomattox. The regiment consisted of around 600 men in April, 1862 and reported 40 casualties at Williamsburg and 47 at Seven Pines. 12 were killed at Manassas and 52 were injured, 8 were killed and 54 wounded during the Maryland Campaign, and, of the 333 engaged at Gettysburg, half were disabled. Many were captured at Sayler's Creek, and 3 officers and 51 men surrendered on April (, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Robert C. Allen, Robert T. Preston, and William Watts; Lieutenant Colonels Samuel B. Paul and William L. Wingfield; and Majors Michael P. Spessard and Nathaniel C. Wilson. [ Historical Tablet ] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Early's Brigade, Ewell's Division 8 PM 16 September to 10 AM 17 September C.S.A. JACKSON'S COMMAND EARLY'S BRIGADE, EWELL'S DIVISION Brig. Gen Jubal A. Early, Commanding. Organization. 13th, 25th, 31st, 44th, 49th, 52nd and 58th Virginia Infantry (September 16-17, 1862 No.1.) On the night of the 16th, Early's Brigade bivouacked in the farm lane on the left of Jackson's Division and in the Dunkard Church woods, between this point and the Church. At dawn of the 17th, the Brigade moved nearly a mile northwest to support Stuart's Cavalry Division and some Batteries of Artillery. The Brigade was on this duty about an hour when, leaving the 13th Virginia Infantry with Stuart, it returned and formed line on the plateau east of this, perpendicular to the Hagerstown Pike and, advancing in a northerly direction, as a support to Jackson's right, participated in a sanguinary engagement with the right of the First Army Corps, which was obliged to retire, then moved to the south along the west edge of the West Woods, and engaged the enemy near the Dunkard Church.
