This is free site for checking for War Between The States, and click on unit for more info for location mustered. The main problem is this site didn't mention 58Th Va proudest moment at Sharpsburg (Antietam) Md. This was bloodest day in American History until WW11. The 58Th Va plugged gap in southern line at the Dunker's Church, "Ole Jube " Early of Franklin County Va was commanding Gen under Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. These troops had marched from Harper's Ferry Va back to Sharpsburg Md to be engaged in the major action. My Ben T Overstreet was wounded at Sharpsburg, 17, Sept 1862, he was over 40 at the time. He had several brothers, brothers-in-law all in 58th Va. My 2nd great-father, John Henry Preas, had one brother die of Measles, another wounded. The 58th Va marched over 500 miles in one month. A good book is "58th Virginia Infantry" by Robert J Driver, Jr. In his book the 58th Va had to eat green corn and apples many times due to supply problems. A Maryland native described the Southern Army as being dirty, unshaven, but very polite, and only entered if invited into a home. This was printed in another Civil War magazine. There was some rumor that the 58th lost their flag, but also, 58th was last unit to surrender at Appomattox. Gerald Preas http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm
