There are 4 distinct goups of Mitchells in Bedford same timeframe as proved per DNA. The north group Robert, Daniel, James were Irish and out of PA. The south group John, Thomas and William & James (the latter 2 end up in Wilkes NC) were English and out of MD. We aren't certain of the origin of the other 2 groups. I'm not from any known "Mitchell clan" but became interested in the many, many, discussions of Mitchells in Bedford. If it's any help at all, I looked at the 1787 Personal Property Tax Lists A & B by Schreiner Yantis and Love. List A: John Mitchel (no property) his poll tax charged to Robert Boggs. List B: Stephen Mitchel, Robert Mitchel Jr., Robert Mitchel Sr., Robert Mitchel, John Mitchel Jr., Aquilla Mitchel, John Mitchel Sr., William Mitchel, Enos Mitchel, James Mitchel, Samuel Mitchel, Daniel Mitchel. All 12 men on List B were listed as responsible for their own taxes. The law for 1787 declared age 21 as the legal age for taxation of property. In that case all the men on List B should have been born BY 1766. Since wives and children under 16 were never listed I'd venture a guess all these Mitchels' could have populated their own town! Public Claims: In addition to the above list an Abraham Mitchell and a Thomas Mitchell are listed separately as Bedford County residents who had supplied 250 pounds of beef to the Commissioner of the Provision Law during the Revolution.
