    3. Edith BROWN first appears on tax lists for Bedford County from 1789 through 1794 as the head of the house with no titheables over 21. She is listed on the tax rolls after Joseph, Zachariah and Jesse BROWN. Although I don't know who they are, I am assuming that there was some relation to them as they were listed together and all lived in the Beaverdam Creek area of the county. Edith was not listed after 1794 since on July 19, 1794 (bond dated for marriage) she married John GRANT, formerly of Botetourt County. They were married July 22 by Rev. Nov 2, 1799 Montgomery Co., Va. to Dance BROWN (above). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------- Here is chornology of John GRANT's information that I have: 1783-John GRANT living with Joseph BALDWIN, Sr., Joseph BALDWIN, Jr., and Frances BALDWIN in Loudoun Co., Va. according to the property tax information. 1784-John GRANT left Loudoun Co., Va. along with others around that time. There were 2 John Grants in Loudon personal tax lists of 1782. One was gone in 1783 and one still there in 1790. Mine left. Samuel HARRIS had sons: CHILD 1. William HARRIS who was in Bedford Co. children: (a). Samuel m. Margaret HOLMES. (b). William m. Eliz. HOLMES (sister). When Wm. died, Eliz. married Sam'l. OLIPHANT. (note: Jesse BROWN & Dice sold land in Bedford Co. to Sam'l OLIPHANT on Beaver Dam Branch. Also Joseph BLANKENSHIP sold to Joseph BROWN in 1795 land on Bedford Co.'s Beaverdam Branch. Also Anthony PATE sold to Jesse BROWN south of Beaverdam Branch adjacent to Joseph PAYNE.) CHILD 2. Samuel HARRIS Jr. m. Mary ______ in Botetourt also had children: William and Samuel. When Samuel Jr. died, Mary (widowed) in same tax area as her sons Wm. and Samuel and also John GRANT. By 1784, they left Loudoun Co. for Botetourt County. 1787-John GRANT of Botetourt Co., Va. bought 100 acres from Joshua HUCKABY of Bedford Co., Va. on Enoches? Creek. Witnesses-John RAY, Lemuel HUDDLESTON, and Daniel HUDDLESTON. 1787-There is a William HARRIS in same dictrict as John GRANT - also a Samuel BALDWIN. These BALDWIN and HARRIS families lived in the same area in Loudoun as Richard BROWN family. 1788-Bedford Co., Va. tax list (2-tithables over 21 thus must have had a son who would have been born before 1767). 1791-Sept, - Bedford Co., Va. Court Order book Vol. 8, page 112: Ordered that James MCDANIEL, son of Mary BURGESS be bound by the overseers to John GRANT according to law. 1792-June 25, John GRANT and wife Lydia (signed Violet on the bottom of deed along with Wayman and Mary (WATTS) SINCLAIR sold 192 acres to George SIMMONS in Bedford County, Va. The land was on the north branch of the north fork of Enoch's Creek - corner of SIMMONS and Thomas WRIGHT also adj. to Wm. SCOTT, then along the south fork of Enock's creek, then by where the branch empties into Ed (Edward) WATT'S pond, then with NEWLINE'S line. Why did they sell this land with John GRANT and Lydia, unless Lydia was a WATTS and sister to Mary and both daughters of Edward & Eliz. WATTS 1792-July 16, John GRANT of Bedford Co., Va. bought 100 acres from Julius SANDERS of Bedford Co. Wit. David HUGHES, George MOODY, and William MARTIN. 1792-July 16, John GRANT witnessed sale of 24 acres in Bedford Co., Va. of John WOODY and Lockey his wife, to Julius SANDERS all of Bedford, Co. Other witnesses - David HUGHES and George MOODY. 1794-June 15, his daughter, Ruth, married James PHELPS in Bedford Co., Va. The surety by Richard THURMAN. 1794-July 19, Eady BROWN marriage to John GRANT. Solemnized by John AYERS, JP in Bedford Co., Va. 1796-Sep 24 John & Edy GRANT sold 50 acres to Julius SANDERS in Bedford Co., Va. 1796-Sep 24, John & Edy GRANT of Bedford Co., Va. sold 69 acres to John MOODY of Bedford Co. on Merriman's Run. 1800 (approx) -In Bedford County Farley HATCHER, administrator of Benjamin HATCHER'S estate - bounds John GRANT'S line. 1801-John GRANT enters treasury warrant No. 2407 for 52 acres together with 118 acres on warrant No. 17395 issued 26th June, 1783, the 118 acres of which is assigned to him by Ben STEVENS agent for John A. HAMILEN, assignee of George STUBBLEFIELD, on the Bearspring which is adjacent to John ALSUP. This is currently located in Giles Co., Va. just north of present day Montgomery Co. 1803-May 3, Seth & Eliz. CALDWELL sold to John GRANT (all of Montgomery Co. Va.) 65 acres for $20. This land located on waters of Bear Spring on the South side of Buckeye Mountain, which is again in present day southern Giles Co., Va. Also this was adjacent to the ALSUP family. 1804-Feb 3, Ralph & Eliz. BOGEL of Wythe Co., Va. sold to Edward MORGAN of Montgomery Co., Va. 80 acres for 75 lbs. of Va. money. This land was located in then Montgomery Co. (present day Giles Co.?) on the Bear Spring and adjacent to John ALSUP. Witnesses were John GRANT, Danel BROWN, and James CALDWELL.. 1804-Feb 6, John GRANT and Edith his wife sold 130 acres in Montgomery Co. to Edward MORGAN (they all being of Montgomery Co.) This land being on the Bear Spring. 1804-Feb 7, John & Edith GRANT sold 65 acres to Edward MORGAN in Montgomery Co., Va. This land being on the South side of Buckeye Mountain and on the waters of Bear Spring. 1806-Oct. court order book (1799-1808) p. 568 ordered that the indentures between John JESSEE binding to him Polly HINDS be cancelled and given up and that the overseers of the poor or any one of them bind the same Polly HINDS to John GRANT according to law. 1806-Nov. Russell Co. court order book (1799-1808) p. 571 indenture of bargain & sale of land from Charles CAZEE (KEEZEE?) and Mary his wife to John GRANT in Russell Co., acknowledged in court by the said Charled and ordered to be recorded. 1806 - 130 acres value 50 Russell Co. 1807 - 130 acres value 50 Russell Co. 1807 - John GRANT bought 97 acres in Russell Co. from Charles KIZER. 1808 - Sept. 5, John & Eady sold 97 acres in Russell Co. to John CANDLER. It is stated on the deed that it is on his mill creek, apparently meaning that he, John GRANT, ran a mill. On Sept. 6, 1808 pg 727 of the Russell Co. court order book (1799-1808) records this sale. Also Henry KIRK and Mary his wife sold to John CANDLER land located on Sinking Creek, parte of John BUSTER'S original patent. 1808 - no tax rolls in Russell Co. 1809 - no John GRANT listed in Russell Co.tax lists (nor a Daniel BROWN). 1809 - 130 acres no location listed 1810 - 130 acres no location listed 1811 - 130 acres no location listed 1812 - 130 acres no location listed 1813 - 130 acres no location listed residence unknown 1814 - 130 acres no location listed resicence unknown 1816 - Giles Co. Edward MORGAN showed to the satisfaction of the court that he purchased from John Grant 130 acres of land and paid the purchase money therefore in the year of 1812, and that although the taxes thereon were in arrears prior to that time (means that they were not paid) for the period of 1806 to 1815, he has paid part of those taxes and presented to the court a receipt therefore and he was given credit for the amount for which he was paid.
