    3. This was copied from the VACAROLI-L@rootsweb.com with permission. "If you knew of anyone who had an ancestor who fought in the Civil War and whose grave needed a marker, the Federal Government is still paying to have one created for the veteran. Jason Lewis just wrote the email I include below and though he lives in Alabama, he has offered to answer questions or help anyone who needs more guidance on ordering a marker. I personally was unaware of such a government program til Jason wrote and asked me to post it on the Alabama site. '"....Go to the county courthouse and then go to the Veteran Affairs Dept. Tell them that you want to order a Confederate marker. You need to have proof that these people served in the Confederate army, such as an official muster roll pension application or some kind of other proof. You need to have date of birth and death and place of burial. You will have go and get the marker from the place that it is send to and place it down yourself. I have mine sent to a funeral home and they call me when it comes in. If I can help out anybody, please give them my e-mail address or telephone# 205-921-5180." Jason Lewis WMMILLS@webtv.net"' "by the way.... If there is a stone already on the grave, then the veteran would not be entitled to a free one from the Federal Gov't." Lots of work and effort and no compensation other than the satisfaction of knowing that these men are finally getting a decent marker.
