    1. Re: STRATTON/LEFTWICH/HAYNES Families
    2. Hi Brad! I spent a little time searching for a Wiley and Henry Stratton of VA in the time period before 1820. What I found is probably not the right folks, but it may interest you and others chasing Bedford County relatives. I found a Wiley and Henry Stratton (and others) in the following book: Hopkins, Walter Lee, "Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia and Their Connections", 1931, 350pages, indexed. re-published by C.J. Carrier Harrisonburg, VA, 1992. The Hopkins book lists 19 Stratton references in the index, from the marriage of Jane "Gincey" Stratton, 3rd wife of Col. Thos. Leftwich in 1783 (on page 19) to the reference to his daughter Polly Stratton in the will of the same Col. Thos. Leftwich (1740-1815) on page 313. Incidentally, Col. Leftwich managed to outlive 2 of his 3 wives and several of his nineteen (19!) children. The Wiley J. Stratton referenced is NOT your Wiley B. Stratton , but I found they do link to my HAYNES family! Wiley J. Stratton's parents were Elizabeth Leftwich (b. 1778) and Thomas Stratton (b. Bedford County); g'parents were Sarah Hampton and Henry Stratton (b. Chesterfield County, d. 1799 Bedford Co.); ggreatgrandparents were Elizabeth Elam and Thomas Stratton (b. 1710 Bermuda Hundreds, VA, d. 1773 Chesterfield County, VA.) Jane "Gincey" Stratton was probably the sister of Thomas Stratton, since her parents were also Sarah and Henry Stratton. Wiley J. Stratton had nine siblings: Susana, John, Thomas, Jeannette (who m. her cousin Jesse Leftwich in 1831--lots of inbreeding!), Martha Malvina, Frazier O., Amelia, and Virginia. Finally, a William Stratton m. Mary (Polly) Haynes, dtr. of Henry Haynes and Bersheba Hampton (my gggreat-grandparents) on November 30, 1793; they had six children. Virginia, especially before 1820. In "A Book of Stratton's", I saw a Wiley J. STRATTON, listed as the son of Thomas & Elizabeth (LEFTWICH) STRATTON, married 2 Dec. 1795, Bedford Co. VA. Although I was unable to make a connection to my STRATTON family, my Henry STRATTON had a son named Wiley B. STRATTON. I don't know how common a name 'Wiley' was at that time, and I don't know if these Bedford Co. VA families are related to me. As for my STRATTON family: Henry STRATTON, b. abt. 1804 VA, married prob. abt. 1830, Jane E. (UNKNOWN), b. abt. 1810 VA. Jane's father was born in Ireland. Henry & Jane E. STRATTON probably moved to Tennessee before 1832. By 1850, they had moved to Hardin Co. TN. Their known children: 1. Hyram W. STRATTON, b. abt. 1832. 2. John W. STRATTON, b. abt. 1835. 3. Sarah E. STRATTON, b. abt. 1838. 4. Henry W. STRATTON, b. abt. 1839. 5. Wiley B. STRATTON, b. abt. 1842. 6. Hannah M. STRATTON, b. abt. 1845. 7. Catherine J. STRATTON, b. abt. 1847. 8. Thomas M. STRATTON, b. 1849. I believe these children were all born in Tennessee. I was hoping that someone might see a similarity in their given names. Any info greatly appreciated!
