Hello Elisa, This is in response to your recent request for information relating to your COHARN/COHORN ancestors. Like you, I too am searching for my COUGHRAN (COHARN) ancestors, in particular a George COUGHRAN or COHARN b. c1765 in Bedford or Charlotte Co., VA. I believe, but cannot yet prove, that your Hugh COHARN is related to my ancestor in some way. You may already be aware of this, but the surname COHARN/COHORN is a particular variant of the surname COUGHRAN that was spoken in the Bedford-Campbell-Charlotte County, Virginia area in the mid-1700s. I cannot say exactly why this is so. It may be that the county clerk heard these Scots- Irish immigrants pronounce their names that way or maybe our ancestors just dropped the -G. In any case, I have seen this name spelled COUGHRAN, CAUGHRAN, COHARN, COHORN, COTHRAN, CAWTHORN, CATHERN, CAUTHRON, COCHRAN, etc. This makes researching this family extremely difficult, to say the least. As luck would have it, I presently live in Virginia and have been collecting every tidbit of information on the Virginia COCHRAN/COUGHRANs from that era that I can find. My file has grown quite large. Some patterns are emerging and though I've not found the smoking gun linking my George COUGHRAN with the first immigrants from northern Ireland I think I am getting very close. I'm pretty sure their names wereeither Peter or John COUGHRAN, whom I believe were brothers who came down to VA from Lancaster Co., PA around 1745. I haven't traveled to Bedford and Campbell Counties just yet, but I will in the near future. I have heard there are sources there that are not available in the LVA in Richmond which is where I've done much of my current research on this family. I have written out below what little I know about your line. I haven't found any reference to a Hugh COHORN c1800 in VA yet, but if I do I'll post it to this list. I know my info doesn't answer your question about where Hugh came from, but it may give you some more leads. Your George W. COHARN married Lizzie Haynes. I hope this helps. Yours, Bob 1.
